Huddersfield Town play Everton at the John Smith’s Stadium tonight in the second round of the league cup. After winning our first cup game in a very long time against Sheffield Wednesday in a penalty shootout three weeks ago we have been rewarded with the chance to host a Premier League club in our stadium for the first time since relegation. Both teams are likely to rotate their teams considerably tonight, so trying to predict Town’s lineup is a bit like trying to guess the lottery numbers. While it makes sense to rest players that aren’t fully fit, I only hope that the team we put out is one that at least has a chance of competing against Everton’s second string - which could include the likes of James Rodriguez. Town travel to South Yorkshire today to take on Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. It’s possibly the best time to be facing the former Premier League side as they have yet to score in their last three games and on Wednesday night they were thumped by West Brom. This is Huddersfield Town though, so it’s never quite that easy. We will have to overcome our own demons before we can even think about exploiting the weaknesses of another team. I’ve already written about how Tuesday’s 1-0 victory over Preston has done little to settle my concerns about Town. Thankfully Town fans don’t have to spend too long feeling sorry for themselves after Saturday’s humbling at the hands of Fulham as they look to bounce back against Preston at the John Smith’s Stadium tonight. Preston have their own problems to deal with, after losing their first two games, so both sides will be desperate to get back to winning ways. The fact that neither side has had a good start to the season so far could make this game resemble two half-blind pigeons squabbling over a cigarette butt, with lots of determination on show but little skill. Fans will return to the John Smith’s Stadium today for the first time since the start of the pandemic. I’m ridiculously excited about the prospect of being back under those lovely bendy arches later today and it almost feels like what happens on the pitch will be secondary to the experience of physically attending a game. This novelty factor may work to Town’s advantage as the goodwill created by being back in the stadium will be needed as they face one of the best teams (on paper at least) in the league. Recently relegated Fulham come to Town with a squad that isn’t much weaker than the one they had in the Premier League and they are likely to be competing at the top end of the table this season. I’d hoped that this season may feel a bit like a return to normal but even though fans will be able to watch Town play in the Championship for the first time in an age, the spectre of Coronavirus still looms over today’s match. This may not be the best game to try and pick the likely lineup, as rumours abound about the availability of Town’s first team players and even the coaching staff. Huddersfield Town return to competitive action this afternoon when they take on Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough. The South Yorkshire side are now a league below Town, following last season’s relegation but the bookies make them marginal favourites for the game, presumably because they have home advantage and Town’s record in cups in recent years is horrendous. It’s pretty common for clubs to be ambivalent towards the league cup these days but Huddersfield Town seem to take that a step further into open hostility. Predicted lineup, score and four questions for Huddersfield Town’s trip to Blackburn

Town have now played their last midweek game of the season and only have games today and the following two Saturdays before we can all do our best to pretend this season never happened. Today's trip to Blackburn is the final game of a sequence of seven games in three weeks for the Terriers so there's a ready-baked excuse for a subdued performance today. However, if Town can get a win out of this game we can "celebrate" that we've retained our Championship status one game earlier than last season. While that's the kind of progress you need a microscope to inspect, at least those nagging fears of relegation can be put to bed. Goalkeeper: Ryan Schofield A stat came out yesterday that said Schofield has made more saves from shots in the 6 yard box than any keeper in the top four divisions of English football. And he wasn't even first choice until after Christmas. It's a slightly odd stat but it does show that he's very good at reflex saves. Huddersfield Town take on Nottingham Forest this lunchtime in a game that represents a chance to make a significant step towards Championship survival. Nottingham Forest aren't pushovers but we've beaten them once already this season and we have much more to play for as they are all but safe. I'm basing today's predicted lineup on the players I think Carlos should pick, based mostly upon their performances in Tuesday's game against Bournemouth. Many of the starting lineup were outshone by the subs that came on to replace them, so I'd like to see quite a few changes to today's lineup but I have a suspicion that Carlos may choose to stick with the core players he's used most of the season, even those that have underperformed lately.
