A bloated squad, a rookie manager, risky (transfer) business and preseason worries – A pessimist’s preview of Huddersfield Town’s 26/27 season

A bloated squad, a rookie manager, risky (transfer) business and preseason worries – A pessimist’s preview of Huddersfield Town’s 26/27 season

Opinion, Previews
Huddersfield Town kick off their season against Preston North End on Saturday in the Carabao Cup. While many will feel the season doesn't properly start until the following Saturday when we play Wimbledon at home in League One, it feels like a season preview really has to come before the first competitive game. I've already written my optimistic season preview, which you can read by clicking this link. This is the doom and gloom look ahead to the upcoming season. The truth is that nobody really knows how Huddersfield Town fans should be feeling ahead of this season. There are definitely some reasons to be hopeful but, equally, there are some pretty obvious concerns going into this season too. In this article I'll investigate some of those concerns. We have a bloated and mis-shape...
Drury’s promise, The Dribble King, exciting youth and unfulfilled potential – A positive preview of Huddersfield Town’s 26/27 season

Drury’s promise, The Dribble King, exciting youth and unfulfilled potential – A positive preview of Huddersfield Town’s 26/27 season

Opinion, Previews
Huddersfield Town kick off their 26/27 season against Preston North End at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon, in the Carabao Cup. The whole thing is a bit odd, playing at a neutral venue because PNE's pitch isn't ready, a league cup game on a Saturday and it being the season opener. But at least it will be a return to competitive football for Huddersfield Town after a summer break that was just about long enough for me to put last season's disappointments behind me and start with a fresh sense of (cautious) optimism.  As has been the tradition on this blog for many years, I'm breaking my season preview into two halves. This first one is the positive, sunny-side-up look ahead at this season. A more pessimistic (and historically speaking, more accurate) preview will follow soon (UP...
Why I’m Warming to Huddersfield Town’s Appointment of Martin Drury

Why I’m Warming to Huddersfield Town’s Appointment of Martin Drury

News, Opinion
Huddersfield Town have announced Martin Drury as their new head coach, following Liam Manning's recent departure from the club. After overseeing the last seven games of the season as a caretaker management duo with Jon Stead, Drury now takes the reins full time with Stead his assistant.  While Drury doesn't have vast experience as a head coach, he did impress with the style of play and straight talking media work when he was caretaker. While the results weren't quite what we needed during that spell, it was the kind of football that we've been promised by previous managers but haven't consistently seen.  I wrote about our vacancy last week and said that I would prefer Town to appoint someone with more experience but now the job has been given to Drury, I'm willing to get be...
Who will be the next Huddersfield Town manager?

Who will be the next Huddersfield Town manager?

News, Opinion
Liam Manning's permanent departure from Huddersfield Town was confirmed last week. Few will have been surprised to hear he wasn't coming back, given the short break he took to address what is clearly a long-term issue. Every sympathy should be extended to Manning and I wish him well for his future but it also sends Huddersfield Town back to the drawing board and having to pick yet another manager. It's tempting to say we've got to get this decision right. But we said that before Lee Grant was appointed. And before Michael Duff and all the other failed coaches that have quickly been in and out of the door. So while it feels like we've got to get this decision right, recent history suggests we may well get it wrong anyway. Thoughts on Manning's departure I really feel for Mannin...
5 reasons why Lee Grant is on thin ice at Huddersfield Town

5 reasons why Lee Grant is on thin ice at Huddersfield Town

Opinion
Huddersfield Town’s capitulation against Bolton marked a new low point in this season which has already had far too many setbacks. Town have now lost five games in the league, an alarming number when the overwhelming majority of teams that have historically achieved automatic promotion from League One lose ten or fewer games on their way to going up. So Town will have to put together an extraordinary turnaround to get their top-two hopes back on track.  The question most Town fans have been asking themselves lately is whether Lee Grant is capable of being the manager to oversee a turnaround in fortunes. I personally think it’s too soon to give him the boot but there are some fairly solid arguments available to question our manager’s performance so far.  Here’s why I think L...
We’re doomed! A pessimistic preview for Huddersfield Town’s 2025/26 season

We’re doomed! A pessimistic preview for Huddersfield Town’s 2025/26 season

Opinion, Tactics
I’ve already published my optimistic preview of the upcoming season, so what follows are all my negative and unpleasant thoughts. Given the current mood around the club, it feels a bit wrong to be applying a cynical perspective to a summer that has been overwhelmingly positive from a Town perspective.  Having said that, the spring was diabolical for Town. We finished the season in relegation form and the team had completely imploded. Plenty has changed at Town since the final game of last season, a new manager, 12 players left, 11 players have arrived, a new coaching team has come in and a new philosophy is developing on the field. But it’s hard not to worry that all this might be yet another case of raised expectations that are ultimately dashed when cold, hard reality bites.  ...
Sunshine and kittens! A positive preview for Huddersfield Town’s 2025/26 season

Sunshine and kittens! A positive preview for Huddersfield Town’s 2025/26 season

Opinion, Tactics
It’s been a long running tradition on this blog to split my season preview articles into two sections, with all the positivity poured into one and the dark, negative feelings contained in the other. To quote John Cooper Clarke, it makes me feel like I’ve got “a dual personality, I hate both of them” (swear filters stop me from sharing the name of the poem this line comes from).  This is the happy look ahead to the 2025/26 season, which you may think Town fans will flock towards compared to the miserable version. Sadly, year after year, the stats show that Town fans are drawn to negativity far more than positivity. So if you chose to click on this article then you have my permission to get your felt tips and sticky back plastic out to make yourself a “happy clapper” badge that you c...
Who was missing from the Huddersfield Town training video?

Who was missing from the Huddersfield Town training video?

Opinion
There isn't a friendly for a few days and the transfer rumour mill isn't churning out much about Huddersfield Town. So with nothing better to do with my time, I've gone through Huddersfield Town’s latest training video and noted down who was there and who wasn't.  You may ask why on Earth I would do this. But if you're reading this then it means you've clicked this article and must be vaguely curious. Though, in reality, I think almost nobody reads these intro paragraphs and most skip to the main content. However, articles look weird without this intro section so I'll keep adding a paragraph or two at the start for those that like to be eased in gently.  Some unexpected faces were training in the video  Before I get to the people that didn't feature in the video, it...
A new hope and familiar problems – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 3-1 friendly defeat to Emley

A new hope and familiar problems – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 3-1 friendly defeat to Emley

Matches, Opinion
It’s an established fact of preseason friendlies that results don’t matter if you lose but are a very good sign if you win. So, working off that system, Town’s 3-1 defeat to Emley is meaningless other than it providing a good workout for the many, many players involved. Also, the scoreline is genuinely a bit misleading if you didn’t catch the game, as the three Emley goals all came in the final half an hour, when the first team had finished and the academy lads were given a run out.  The fact the first team could only put one goal past Emley in the first hour of the game isn’t great but it’s nothing to be too worried about at this stage. With the players only being back in training a week, it’s unlikely this style of play is anywhere close to where Lee Grant wants to get this team....
How to ruin a Huddersfield Town home shirt

How to ruin a Huddersfield Town home shirt

Opinion
Snowflakes all look pretty much the same until you inspect them and realise they're all unique. Huddersfield Town shirts work the same way. Blue and white stripes. It should be easy, but looking back over the history of Huddersfield Town home shirts since 1990, there are some common failures that have occurred when trying to get the home shirt right. In this article, I'm going to dig into the various ways that previous kit manufacturers have made a mess of our home kit. With Town likely to announce our new Castore-made shirt in the next few days, this article will hopefully make it easier to assess whether they've avoided the mistakes of the past. (Obviously, this article is all my own opinion and other fans will have their own ideas about what makes a good Town home kit. On most sub...
