Wow! – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 3-0 win over Wimbledon

Matches, Notes
Huddersfield Town won their opening League One game of the season 3-0 despite playing over an hour with ten men. Wimbledon were dreadful but Town deserve credit for exploiting their opponent's weaknesses so relentlessly and giving them a torrid afternoon.  Prior to the game there were as many reasons to be skeptical as there were to be positive about Huddersfield Town but we were excellent throughout the whole game and set aside many of the doubts in fans’ minds. It's perhaps a bit early to be getting too carried away after just one game but this match has laid a marker down for the season and given the players a standard that they now have to keep striving for.  Here are some of my thoughts on the game… Three great goals Every 3-0 win is going to feel good but th...
“Mentality issues” – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s Carabao Cup exit to Preston North End

“Mentality issues” – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s Carabao Cup exit to Preston North End

Matches, Notes
Absence makes the heart grow fonder, so as a Huddersfield Town fan I had just about put aside the disappointments of last season over the summer and was ready for a fresh start. So it felt like a sucker punch to see Town start their season doing the thing they did so much towards the end of last season: throwing away winning positions in injury time.  A penalty defeat to Preston North End in the Carabao Cup is not the end of the world but the manner of the defeat has brought all of last season's frustrations back to the boil. There were positives to draw from the game but mostly from the first half after Preston went down to ten men. The period of the first half when Preston had eleven men and the whole of the second half were poor from a Town perspective and the late equaliser fel...

“Lots of work to do” – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 2-1 victory over AFC Fylde

Huddersfield Town beat Fylde 2-1 in their second preseason friendly on Saturday afternoon. Thankfully, it's an established fact that friendlies don't really mean much beyond being a good workout for the players while they get back up to full speed in time for a new season. This is a relief, as Town were pretty dreadful in the first half before looking a bit more like it in the second half. The game did give us a good look at the squad, with 22 players getting 45 minutes under their belts. There were some good bits and some bad bits but my overwhelming takeaway was that there's a lot of work to do with this squad before it's ready for competitive football in a few weeks time. Both the style of play and the squad composition need some fairly major tweaking to get it into the right place, ...
Long throws, new players, old problems and injury worries – Thoughts on Huddersfield Town’s 3-1 friendly defeat to Birmingham

Long throws, new players, old problems and injury worries – Thoughts on Huddersfield Town’s 3-1 friendly defeat to Birmingham

Matches, Notes
Huddersfield Town were beaten 3-1 against Birmingham in their first friendly of the preseason. The scoreline flatters Birmingham as all three of their goals were due to Huddersfield Town errors. While friendlies are not worth getting too excited about, conceding late goals and making silly mistakes were serious issues last season, so it's a shame to see more of the same in our first game back from the break.  There were plenty of positives to draw from this game and the early signs are looking good about Martin Drury's approach. Though this game also highlighted some areas that need to be improved. Here are my thoughts on each of the two halves and what, if anything, we've learned from this game.  The first half Town's team: Young, Balker, Wallace Roughan, Sorensen, L...
Notes on Huddersfield Town’s impressive 4-0 victory over AFC Wimbledon

Notes on Huddersfield Town’s impressive 4-0 victory over AFC Wimbledon

Huddersfield Town bounced back from their drubbing at the hands of Mansfield last week by handing out a drubbing to Wimbledon yesterday. Neither result particularly matters in the grand scheme of things but it was at least some consolation to see the team play well. Wimbledon had secured survival in their penultimate game of the season so approached this game as a pre-holiday kickabout, so Town didn't have to work too hard to find their openings. Even still, this was a genuinely good Huddersfield Town performance which is something we've seen very little of this season. It's easy to frame this game as a disappointment because we waited until our season was effectively over to show what we can do, Martin Drury certainly felt this way in his post-match comments. It's probably more useful ...
Some random thoughts about Huddersfield Town’s 1-0 victory over Bradford City

Some random thoughts about Huddersfield Town’s 1-0 victory over Bradford City

Matches, Notes
In Liam Manning’s first game as manager, we saw a team playing with the parts of the game that we’ve been badly missing for the majority of this season. Grit, fight, bravery and energy were the qualities that stood out over the 90 minutes, which gave Town the platform to then play quality football at times too. It was the sort of front-foot, aggressive football that we’d been promised under the banner of “Northern Football” even though the reality under Lee Grant was a far more tepid and sanitised version.  It’s been a struggle to find time to do writeups about Huddersfield Town recently, so this article is a bit of an experiment. Here are my random thoughts on Town’s brilliant 1-0 victory over Bradford City.  How the game unfolded Town made a brilliant, positive start w...
Wallace overlooked, a battling performance, window shopping & softball interviews – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 1-1 draw with Lincoln

Wallace overlooked, a battling performance, window shopping & softball interviews – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 1-1 draw with Lincoln

Matches, Notes
Huddersfield Town managed to come away from Sincil Bank with a point following their 1-1 draw with Lincoln. You can question whether a team with our aspirations should be satisfied scraping a draw against Lincoln but that mentality wouldn't acknowledge the quality Lincoln play with, their current run of excellent form and that we can't expect teams to roll over for us just because we're Huddersfield Town. Lincoln carved us open time after time in the first half but wayward finishing and good work from Nicholls kept us in the game. We then grew into the game in the second half, taking the lead through Leo Castledine before being pegged back thanks to being outmuscled at a set piece. A fair result and decent performance, even if both could have been better. Alfie May looked like he was...
Tactical injury breaks, a breathtaking start, in-form strikers and Bojan’s straight fringe – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 3-1 win over Mansfield

Tactical injury breaks, a breathtaking start, in-form strikers and Bojan’s straight fringe – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 3-1 win over Mansfield

Matches, Notes
Huddersfield Town continued their good run of form with a 3-1 win against Mansfield on Saturday. We’ve now won our last three consecutive games after a run of one win in eight games. While it’s probably too soon to be getting carried away, the style of play and the goals we’ve been scoring hint towards the kind of football we all hoped we’d be seeing this season under Lee Grant.  You could argue that beating Mansfield twice and a woeful Plymouth team shouldn’t be cause to start planning a promotion party for next May, but there is at least a glimmer of what this squad is capable of. What’s even more interesting is that the players most instrumental in this turnaround have been fringe players that have been called upon because of injuries mounting up, alongside some of the expected ...
Lee Grant hanging by a thread, Kevin Nagle feeds the trolls, how not to play with ten men and red card thoughts – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 3-0 defeat to Wycombe

Lee Grant hanging by a thread, Kevin Nagle feeds the trolls, how not to play with ten men and red card thoughts – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 3-0 defeat to Wycombe

Matches, Notes
It's been a few days now since Huddersfield Town lost 3-0 to Wycombe and the passing of time hasn't made this result more palatable. In fact, if I was to describe this game as a meal in a restaurant, it would be a bucket of hot sick with something unmentionable floating in it as a crouton. It is tempting to say this is the worst performance since a long while back but the sad truth is that it's only the worst defeat since the last defeat, when we threw away a 1-0 lead by allowing two stoppage time goals. But, for a team with Town's aspirations, we really shouldn't be turning in so many horrible performances. You can only get away with calling a poor performance "a bad day at the office" so many times. If you're continually having bad days at the office, maybe they're not isolated incide...
Duff-esque, trigger happy Town fans, Grant’s rose tinted specs and Roosken’s towel – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 0-0 draw with Burton Albion

Duff-esque, trigger happy Town fans, Grant’s rose tinted specs and Roosken’s towel – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 0-0 draw with Burton Albion

Matches, Notes
In a game where Town fans hoped to see this team bounce back from defeat to Bradford, Huddersfield Town stumbled to a 0-0 draw with bottom-of-the-table Burton Albion on Saturday. Town were a bit unlucky to see a flurry of late chances either cleared off the line or just miss the target but the need to push for a late winner was due to Town making a hash of the first hour of the game.  Draws can generate a variety of feelings but this one definitely falls into the two points dropped category. And while the league table doesn't look too bad, it's a bigger concern that we've looked poor in recent games.  Here are a few of my thoughts on the game…. Duff-esque This game felt a lot like watching Michael Duff’s Huddersfield Town of last season. The dour football, the inability to...
