Predicted Huddersfield Town starting XI and pre-match talking points for Wigan at home

Huddersfield Town take on Wigan on Saturday lunchtime in front of the Sky TV cameras in a 12.30 kickoff that I nearly missed. It's only a matter of time before I turn up for a lunchtime kickoff at three o'clock and miss the game but thankfully it won't be this weekend. Huddersfield Town sit second in the table (level with leaders Stockport on both points and goal difference but with a lower goals scored figure) while Wigan are at the very bottom of League One, having won two, drawn one and lost the rest of their games. It would be foolish to assume this game will be an easy ride for the Terriers though, as Wigan can be the kind of stubborn, defensive team that we often struggle to break down. Huddersfield Town take on Peterborough under the floodlights this evening in a match that I'm really looking forward to going to watch. Town are in great form at the moment and go into this game after their best performance of the season last Saturday when we beat Plymouth 2-0. Peterborough are enjoying a new manager bounce since the arrival of Robbie Savage, having taken four points from his first two league games and won in the EFL Trophy. Two teams that are both in decent form and have a preference for fast attacking football coming up against each other should be a recipe for a good game of football. Huddersfield Town take on Plymouth Argyle on Saturday afternoon. For those of you that have ever wondered, Plymouth don't take their name from the Argyle jumper. It's based on the name of a street in Plymouth, which is pretty dull. And in absorbing this completely useless factoid your brain has probably pushed out something useful, like where you've left your keys or the name of one of your neighbours. Plymouth Argyle currently sit at the top of the League One table but Town are only three points behind them with a game in hand, so winning this game will see them leapfrog Plymouth due to our superior goal difference. Huddersfield Town take on Rochdale tonight in the group stage of the Jersey Mike's Trophy. Nope, I'd not heard of Jersey Mike's before either but they're the sponsor of this competition and, apparently, a sandwich shop. Given this competition lacks credibility at the best of times, constantly changing sponsors from one obscure company to another doesn't help to build name recognition or prestige. Anyway, Martin Drury has already made it clear that he intends to give his fringe players a run out in this game, so it should be a chance to have a look at some players that aren't getting many minutes in the league right now. As much as watching Huddersfield Town can be an unpleasant experience at times, it’s still annoying when the international break gives a pause to the football. Thankfully neither Burton or Huddersfield Town had enough internationals to justify calling off this Saturday’s game, so we’ve only missed one weekend of football. As a fan, I haven’t enjoyed the break in club football but I can see how some extra time on the training ground and a break from competitive games was a good thing for the team. Huddersfield Town head to Bromley on Saturday afternoon. It’s the first ever time the two teams have met in a competitive game, which is hardly a surprise given that Bromley’s first season in the football league came in 2024. More surprising is that Bromley were founded in 1892, so have a longer history than Huddersfield Town (founded in 1908) even if they've spent the vast majority of their time at non-league and amateur regional league level. Huddersfield Town take on Mansfield Town this afternoon and will be hoping to continue their unbeaten start to the season. Mansfield have won two and lost three of their opening five league games this season, among those results, a 5-2 win over Luton showed they're a threat but their 5-0 defeat against Reading suggests they've also got significant weaknesses. Martin Drury may have had his selection choices complicated for this game by some decent performances by backup players in the midweek game against Doncaster Rovers in the EFL Trophy. Huddersfield Town launch their EFL Trophy campaign tonight when they travel to Doncaster Rovers for their first group stage fixture. It's easy to ignore these games and focus on the more serious business of the league but I'll talk later about why I think these cup games can be a good thing. Huddersfield Town host Notts County on Saturday afternoon and will be hoping to extend their unbeaten start to the season and to strengthen their position at the top of the League One table. I used to think league tables were pointless so early in a new season but now I think they're very very useful and relevant. Town being top may have been a factor in my change of heart. Our opponents in this game are also unbeaten in the league so far, with three draws and one win. Huddersfield Town started the season with a double-header against Wimbledon and the team that stole their old club's place in the league, MK Dons. The following two fixtures of our season see Town in a double-header against places better known for their universities than their football teams, with last Saturday's trip to Cambridge and tonight's visit of Oxford. This fact isn't related to football, but I was surprised to see that Huddersfield University has almost as many students (20,000ish) as Cambridge (25,000ish) and Oxford(27,000). So if you judge a university's quality purely on the number of students studying there, we're not actually that far behind these more established university towns.
