Wholesale changes – Predicted Huddersfield Town XI to take on Plymouth

Huddersfield Town will play Plymouth in the third round of the FA Cup this evening. While all the "magic of the cup" clichés are trotted out as usual, it's hard not to feel like this is just lip service when most clubs will be fielding dramatically weakened sides in a bid to rest their first team players. I strongly suspect Huddersfield Town will be no different to other clubs and will play a second string team of mostly youngsters. Anyone that remembers the friendlies against Bradford and Manchester United U23s friendlies will recall that it was actually quite entertaining to watch our academy lads being given a chance. Happy New Year Town fans! Huddersfield Town will take on Reading later today in their first game of 2021 in a Championship clash which should be a good test for Town. Reading were this season's surprise package when they topped the table in the early stages but have since reverted to the inconsistent kind of form that is typical of so many Championship teams. Huddersfield Town take on Blackburn Rovers tonight in a game that has potential to be an entertaining affair with two attacking teams. Town will be keen to put a lacklustre Boxing Day performance at Barnsley behind them and to continue their excellent home form. Predicted Huddersfield Town XI to take on Barnsley

When the fixtures came out my eyes immediately darted towards the Boxing Day game and I remember thinking that an away game at Barnsley was an excellent fixture and felt optimistic that fans might be allowed back in by then. So it's going to feel bitter sweet to tune into the stream on iFollow instead of making the journey to Oakwell myself. I'm glad I'll be able to watch the game but it won't be the same as being in the stands, smelling the newly gifted Lynx Africa and watching turkey sandwiches being stuffed into gobs. Obviously the world faces greater hardships than football fans not being able to watch games from inside crowded stadia but it's still sad we can't all come together to watch our team in person. Huddersfield Town host Watford this afternoon in their final game of an intense period of double-game weeks. The squad will have the luxury of a full week before they next return to action against Barnsley on Boxing Day. The need to rotate players should be reduced because we've not got a midweek game to consider so I'd expect to see close to our best available starting eleven. Last Saturday was a new low for this blog's attempts at predicting the lineup as Carlos defied expectations and played a weakened side against one of the league's best teams. Today's lineup will hopefully be a return of familiar faces after the replacements that came in on Saturday were almost universally poor in the 5-0 defeat to the Cherries. Here's how I think we'll lineup tonight. Goalkeeper: Schofield Hamer came off as a precaution at half time at the weekend but it seems he's likely to need at least this game to recover too after picking up a slight muscle strain. It might not be a full blown injury crisis but you could definitely call it an “injury pickle” that we face currently with Hogg, Schindler, Koroma and Stearman all recently succumbing to injuries. I’ve spoken many times before about how thin our squad is this season, so losing key players hits us harder than many other teams as the amount of experience and quality in our backup players is often not great. After a disappointing defeat to Cardiff on Tuesday night, Town have an opportunity to get back to winning ways against QPR this afternoon. We are up against a team that share many of Huddersfield Town's characteristics such as playing out from the back, trying to play attractive football and often getting it all a bit wrong. Like Town, QPR have both underperformed in some games and over-achieved in others, so the game is particularly hard to predict, much like Carlos Corberán's team selections. Huddersfield Town will play against Cardiff tonight in south Wales. The Terriers will be hoping to build upon their decent win against Middlesbrough at the weekend but face stiff opposition after Cardiff beat Luton 4-0 last Saturday. I can imagine it will be a tough, physical battle against the Bluebirds and Town will most likely have to mix it up a bit before they can play the free-flowing, passing game they aspire to. Huddersfield Town face a stern test in their first match back after the international break when they head to the Potteries to play Stoke. After the start we’ve had under Carlos Corberán we don’t need to fear any opponent but we will need to be at our best to beat a team with one of the strongest squad’s in the Championship with a canny manager at the helm.
