Late last night Huddersfield Town made me look silly by announcing a new signing despite the article I wrote yesterday confidently predicting that we only announce signings between 12pm and 8pm. Nevertheless, Town announced the signing of Pipa from Espanyol.
The Spanish U21 player has arrived in Huddersfield and has helped lift the increasingly tense mood among Town fans frustrated by the lack of transfer activity. But how do Espanyol fans feel about this player leaving? With some help from Google Translate, I’ve put together some of the responses from their fans.
Most fans were sorry to see him go
It’s reassuring to see that the bulk of comments about Pipa are positive and Espanyol fans are sad to see a former youth team player leave before he reached his full potential with them.

Not getting a chance
The fans of Espanyol also expressed some frustration that Pipa didn’t get more games with them. My impression is that he’s a potent attacking force but not as skilled on the defensive aspects of playing fullback.

Negative
The only negative I could see was some doubt about why different coaches didn’t give him a run in the side (he’s only played 7 times in La Liga). Leigh Bromby said he did his due diligence on Pipa’s character so I don’t think there’s anything to worry about.
- Well, good luck that it goes very well but I personally will not miss him much.
- You will not regret having signed Óscar Gil, really. Pipa offensively looks better, but defensively Oscar was very solid last season.
- No matter how good preseason he has done, he has been a substitute with more than 5 coaches, it will be for something.
- No coach has trusted him. There is something we do not know.
Angry at the club letting him go
Some fans were quite angry about seeing one of their top prospects being allowed to leave for a relatively small fee.
- What a bunch of incompetents you are… Instead of giving him up, you sell him for four dogs. An international under 21 that could play wing or full back and with a great future. And now what if Miguelón or Gil go wrong? You guys are pathetic.
- What a shame another parakeet we all have scattered out there and what comes the same doesn’t even improve what we let go. [I thought Google Translate was having a moment until I remembered that Espanyol’s nickname is the parakeets.

I’m happy with the signing. He’s a young man with international experience at youth level. If that’s the way we are going cost wise at least it’s a standard we will be looking to achieve, and it lets the fans know what to expect.
Highlights don’t show a true reflection, they only show what the players done right, they might be the only decent bit of skill he’s shown in play in 3 seasons. it’s like reviews on the internet I don’t like looking at the 5* reviews I tend to look at the 1* to see where the deficiencies are.
Still it’s striking the fans don’t want to see him leave, and we generally don’t get fooled too easy.
Thanks John. It’s true that highlights videos can be misleading but I think they’re useful for getting a flavour of a players strengths. It’s noticeable that Pipa’s video hardly contains any tackles, so his strengths are mainly going forward. We’re desperate for creativity, so hopefully he’ll fit in well.
Thought he looked quite strong in his challenges brushing people aside at his age and size impressed me, he looks happy to stay on his feet and go shoulder to shoulder

I think Pipa looks OK going forward, and I agree that the fans’ disappointment probably gives a fair idea of talent.
I hope we are getting a decent striker to feed off his crosses.
It was sod’s law! I’m just happy we’ve finally signed a player that we can get excited about. A striker or goal-scoring winger would definitely be next on my shopping list for Town.

I love your optimism! That does like an 11 that’s at least competitive in the Championship. Keeping them all fit and in form isn’t likely, so we need to have backup of similar quality. There’s also a lot of pressure on one of those attackers to fill Grant’s boots. You could argue some aren’t even fit to clean them.
