PLAYER RATINGS: Huddersfield Town 0-3 Liverpool

Huddersfield Town were outclassed by Liverpool in a Premier League mismatch that continued our poor run of results.

I thought there were a few encouraging signs in Town’s performance but we were a long way short of the standard required to get points against top Premier League teams.

John Smiths Stadium

Lössl – 6 out of 10

Unlucky with the deflection for the opener but shouldn’t have left his near post open for the second goal.

Löwe – 7 out of 10

Limited Salah’s opportunities to get into space and run at us. Offered very little going forward apart from the excellent cross for Depoitre early in the game.

Kongolo – 7 out of 10

Made some excellent clearances and looked composed despite having to soak up a lot of pressure.

Schindler – 8 out 10

Seems to suit being in the middle of a back three. Very solid and made some vital tackles.

Zanka – 7 out of 10

A much-improved performance compared to recent games. No notable errors and looked strong.

Hadergjonaj – 6 out of 10

A little bit lightweight at times. Dangled his legs into tackles rather than fully committing.

Hogg – 8 out of 10

Sat back and protected the back line well. Made a lot of important interceptions.

Mooy – 6 out of 10

Showed glimmers of his former self but still looked out of touch and tired. Playing in a midfield three allowed him to get forward more but wasn’t able to produce the perfect passes needed to release the forwards.

Billing – 5 out of 10

Didn’t look match fit and was a weak link for Town. His half-hearted closing down meant Can’s shot was deflected off him and in for the first goal.

The penalty he gave away, while harsh, was a silly thing to do. If you put any pressure on a player in the box then they’ll go down. He shouldn’t have been so clumsy.

Depoitre – 7 out of 10

Very little service but ran about plenty, won a few headers and tried his best but was often vastly outnumbered. Should have scored from the chance early in the first half.

Mounié – 6 out of 10

I wouldn’t say he was great but he looked a lot more interested in the game and closed Liverpool down. The only real chance I remember was the goal that was chalked off for offside. At least he put it in the net, despite it not counting.

His movement and positioning wasn’t good when Depoitre was going up for headers. Rather than making runs for flick-ons he’d be stood watching.

Substitutes

Quaner – 7 out of 10

He brought energy onto the pitch and nearly caught Liverpool out a few times. Could have won a penalty for Town but in real time it didn’t look like a pen to me.

VLP & Ince – N/A

Neither made an impact on the game. Ince had a chance to score when a loose ball dropped to him in the box. He dithered on the ball and failed to take advantage.
