“Not the prettiest” – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s ugly win against Wigan

Huddersfield Town battled a tough Wigan team and rotten weather conditions to win 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. The game wasn't a classic but Huddersfield Town showed some resilience and just enough quality to win the kind of game that typically ends up with dropped points. The win sends Town to the top of the league table and completes a sequence of Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday games with three consecutive wins. I don't have the stats to hand but it must be a very long time since we've emerged from a hectic week with maximum points. Predicted Huddersfield Town starting XI and pre-match talking points for Wigan at home

Huddersfield Town take on Wigan on Saturday lunchtime in front of the Sky TV cameras in a 12.30 kickoff that I nearly missed. It's only a matter of time before I turn up for a lunchtime kickoff at three o'clock and miss the game but thankfully it won't be this weekend. Huddersfield Town sit second in the table (level with leaders Stockport on both points and goal difference but with a lower goals scored figure) while Wigan are at the very bottom of League One, having won two, drawn one and lost the rest of their games. It would be foolish to assume this game will be an easy ride for the Terriers though, as Wigan can be the kind of stubborn, defensive team that we often struggle to break down. It’s hard to know how to approach a write-up of last night’s game against Wigan, where Huddersfield Town won 1-0. The victory saw Town extend their unbeaten run in the league to eight games and was also our seventh consecutive win at home, so whichever way you slice it, this result is part of a wider upturn in Huddersfield Town’s fortunes. However, the game also saw some of the club’s persistent problems from this season continue. Our strikers were mostly hard-working but poor, the football we play is stodgy and dull for long periods, and it takes four times as many chances than other teams to actually get the ball in the net. Predicted Huddersfield Town XI to take on Wigan – Will Town’s two new boys start?

Town are back in action again tonight after the unexpected pause in their season following the Queen's death last week. I'd rather the weekend's games had gone ahead with an appropriate tribute to the Queen's life before kickoff but given the game we had called off was a tricky away fixture to QPR, Danny Schofield might have been privately relieved to have missed a fixture where defeat would have piled pressure onto him. Instead he goes into this week with two home games before the international break and has a chance to show that he can get this team playing. It’s been over three months since Town last played. It’s been over six months since I last updated this blog. So expect both Town and this blog to be a bit rusty and make the odd mistake. I thought I’d ease myself back into the blog by having a wild stab at predicting Danny Cowley’s starting eleven for today’s game against Wigan. These predictions are even less likely to be correct than usual given how long it is since Town last played and how little we know about the condition of Town’s squad. Here’s my prediction about how Town will lineup at 3 O’Clock today.
