Castledine or Carss?, a textbook performance, penalty heroics and cup benefits – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s cup win over Sunderland

Matches, Notes
After beating a top-end Championship opposition in the first round, Huddersfield Town knocked out Premier League Sunderland in their second round game of the league cup. And while some may quibble that Town needed penalties in both games, the fact they have won two penalty shootouts can only be good experience. While we don't want to rely on the lottery of the playoffs to go up this season, if we end up in that situation we will benefit from recent penalty experience. As much as you can practise the technical skill of taking a penalty, nothing compares to doing in a stadium with real pressure (even if the League Cup is a good bit lower stakes than a playoff shootout). There was an awful lot to like about this Town performance and very little to grumble about. There’s a risk that some fa...

“A goal of the season contender” – Player ratings for Huddersfield Town’s penalty win over Sunderland

Huddersfield Town made it through to the third round of the League Cup after knocking out Premier League new boys Sunderland on penalties. Town put in an almost flawless first half performance for a team playing against an opponent from a higher league, with Leo Castledine’s sublime strike the icing on the cake of an already great team performance. The second half involved a lot more hanging on and Sunderland had more chances than the one they scored. But Town held their shape well and eventually clawed their way back into the game enough to have chances to win it themselves in the dying stages.  The scores might not reflect a brilliant win against Premier League opposition but the real star of this performance (apart from Leo Castledine) was the collective effort of the team to work ha...

Predicted Huddersfield Town XI to take on Sunderland

Matches, Predicted lineups
Town are in Sunderland tonight for the second round of the league cup. With wholesale changes likely to the starting lineup, it's an impossible task to know what sort of team we will be fielding. There's not much point debating whether Town should or shouldn't field a strong team, as this competition is universally used by teams to give their fringe players a run out.  Luckily, Town have a good amount of depth and few injuries compared to last season, so we can rest players and not lose too much. In fact, this game is a good opportunity to get minutes into a few players that will be miffed to be outside of the starting eleven for league games.  Goalkeeper: Nicholls  Lee Nicholls was the hero of the penalty shootout in the first round and could be again if we can kee...
Why Town might win, Lee Grant’s principles, Gooch’s welcome & fringe players to watch – Talking points ahead of Huddersfield Town’s trip to Sunderland

Why Town might win, Lee Grant’s principles, Gooch’s welcome & fringe players to watch – Talking points ahead of Huddersfield Town’s trip to Sunderland

Huddersfield Town head to The Stadium of Light on Tuesday night for a League Cup game with Premier League new boys, Sunderland. Many fans will find it impossible to get excited about this game or any cup game, but I really enjoyed our game in the first round against Leicester so I’m optimistic this game will be an entertaining watch too.  While the league is obviously Town’s priority this season, these games in the cup give an opportunity to players that have had limited minutes on the pitch so far and knockout football is good fun to watch. This game also has the added incentive of testing ourselves against a Premier League team, even if it is mostly the fringe players they field.  Here are a few of my thoughts before this game… Will Lee Grant stick to his principles?&n...

A whole season in 90 minutes, Mackem’s quality, injury woes, Town’s youth shines, slow transitions, bleak future – Notes on defeat to Sunderland

Huddersfield Town stay stuck at the bottom of the table after defeat to Sunderland last night. Injuries and suspension forced them to field a weakened team and despite battling valiantly in horrendous conditions, they were second best against a Sunderland side that weren’t a great deal better than Town but possessed just enough quality to finish us off. More worrying still, after losing Ollie Turton to long-term injury and Tom Lees to injury before this game, we also saw Yuta Nakayama and Ben Jackson both stretchered off, both looking distraught. Hopefully the prognosis will be positive once they get properly checked over but neither injury looks good, which is particularly heartbreaking for Nakayama with the World Cup just around the corner.  Here are a few more of my thoughts ...

Matches
Huddersfield Town take on Sunderland this evening and will be hoping to extend their unbeaten run to three games. Strangely, it is the first time we have played Sunderland in the league this century, with our only encounter this side of the millennium celebrations coming in a league cup encounter that Town won back in 2003 despite being several leagues below the Mackems at the time. Tonight’s game should be a closely fought encounter with both sides finding themselves in the bottom half of the Championship. After Town’s decent display against Millwall at the weekend though, it’s possible to feel a bit more optimistic about our chances tonight. However, Sorba Thomas will miss the match through suspension after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season on Saturday (most have been for on...
