Town were defeated 2-0 by Spurs at Wembley, in a game that had few surprises and once again showed how hard it is for smaller teams to compete against the best in the Premier League. Town weren’t particularly bad, and to lose by only two goals is no disgrace, but this game never felt like a proper contest and Spurs could have scored more if they weren’t preserving energy for their European game next week. Here are some of my thoughts about the game... A gulf in quality There wasn’t a single player in Town's starting eleven that would have been able to get into Spurs team yesterday. When every single opposition player is better than every single one of yours then there’s not much you can do, so defeat felt inevitable. If Town can manage to stay in this league for a few more s...

Tactics
Huddersfield Town head to Wembley to face Spurs at the weekend following consecutive Premier League victories against Bournemouth and West Brom. It’s likely to be a tough afternoon for Town, and David Wagner will be scratching his head trying to think of ways to play against Spurs. Here are a few of the approaches we’ve seen so far this season when we’ve come up against the top teams in the Premier League. The standard 4-2-3-1 approach Town’s first game against a top six team came against Spurs last September and Wagner played the standard gegenpressing 4-2-3-1 system that he’s favoured during his time in Huddersfield. Arguably Town were on top for the first five minutes and the game was wide open. We crashed a shot against the crossbar when it was 0-0 and it could have been a ...

Huddersfield Town fell to a 4-0 defeat to a clinical Tottenham side that severely punished some silly mistakes from Town. This match showed the gulf in class between the top six teams and the rest of the Premier League. We've been competitive in all six of our previous games, but against Spurs we never stood a chance. Having said that, Town didn't play all that badly. A few players had bad days and made silly errors, but we played some nice football at times and looked like we might cause an upset when we flew at Spurs in the opening minutes. Sadly we caught Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen on good days and they ripped us to pieces. I think this game will have taught Wagner and his men some valuable lessons and it's really not a big deal to catch a beating from an in-form Spurs team. He...

Huddersfield Town v Tottenham Hotspur – Match preview

Matches
Huddersfield Town host Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday in a lunchtime kickoff. Spurs are the first of the big Premier League teams to try their luck against Town. It’ll be a special occasion regardless of the result, but don’t be fooled into thinking David Wagner won’t try and get something from this game. Town are in eighth position in the league on nine points, only two points behind Spurs in fourth place. It’s hard to believe that we’re doing so well, having only lost one game out of our initial six Premier League matches. While Town aren’t expected to win the game by the bookies, a victory would see us leapfrog Tottenham and get back into the top four (at least until the 3 pm games finish).
