Huddersfield Town kick off their season against Preston North End on Saturday in the Carabao Cup. While many will feel the season doesn't properly start until the following Saturday when we play Wimbledon at home in League One, it feels like a season preview really has to come before the first competitive game. The truth is that nobody really knows how Huddersfield Town fans should be feeling ahead of this season. Huddersfield Town kick off their 26/27 season against Preston North End at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon, in the Carabao Cup. The whole thing is a bit odd, playing at a neutral venue because PNE's pitch isn't ready, a league cup game on a Saturday and it being the season opener. But at least it will be a return to competitive football for Huddersfield Town after a summer break that was just about long enough for me to put last season's disappointments behind me and start with a fresh sense of (cautious) optimism. I’ve already published my optimistic preview of the upcoming season, so what follows are all my negative and unpleasant thoughts. Given the current mood around the club, it feels a bit wrong to be applying a cynical perspective to a summer that has been overwhelmingly positive from a Town perspective. Having said that, the spring was diabolical for Town. We finished the season in relegation form and the team had completely imploded. Plenty has changed at Town since the final game of last season, a new manager, 12 players left, 11 players have arrived, a new coaching team has come in and a new philosophy is developing on the field. It’s been a long running tradition on this blog to split my season preview articles into two sections, with all the positivity poured into one and the dark, negative feelings contained in the other. I like to split my season previews into two and write a pessimistic and optimsitic version. I've already published the optimistic version, so you can click over and read that one if you were born on the sunny side of the street. Otherwise, if you'd prefer to dwell on the more concerning omens about the season ahead, strap yourself in for my pitch black preview of the coming season. Before I get started, I'd like to say that this year's negative preview has been harder to write than in previous seasons, as my genuine feelings towards Town are pretty positive right now despite our relegation. As has become a tradition on this blog, I'm dividing my Huddersfield Town season preview into two halves, one dwelling on the negatives and another talking up the positives. It's always impossible to know before a season starts which way things are going to go, so I find splitting myself in two and pouring all my hopes into one article and fears into another makes it easier to write these things. Typically, the pessimistic article is both easier to write and gets around double the clicks from Town fans too. Huddersfield Town’s season starts this Saturday when they travel down to Plymouth, so it feels about right to put together a season preview article. After getting your hope up with my optimistic preview yesterday, it's time to bring you back down to Earth with a thunk with my pessimistic look ahead to Huddersfield Town's 22/23 Championship season. If you're anything like the typical Town fan you'll feel much more at home among the misery and cynicism anyway. Those rare moments of success feel bewildering and almost threatening, much better the familiar and almost comforting gloom that tends to gather over Town Dan's faces when the subject of our club's fates come up. 6 reasons to feel optimistic about Huddersfield Town’s prospects this season

We’re just a couple of days away from the new season starting so I thought I’d look ahead to what we have in store. Rather than try to write one balanced season preview article I’ve split my personality in two and written one that is completely miserable and one that is much more positive. This is the happy clappy, pollyanna one, that looks towards the sunny side of the street and tries to squeeze the positives out of our current situation. The negative preview will be out later. As an interesting aside, I’ve done this double preview approach over the last few seasons and the negative article usually gets about twice as many views as the positive one.
