Lucky chinos, playing out from the back, team changes and miserable Tuesday nights – Notes on Cardiff away

Matches
Huddersfield Town lost 3-0 to Cardiff last night in a game where the Terriers regularly shot themselves in the foot by making silly defensive errors. The attacking side of our game was almost as bad, as wave after wave of attack harmlessly came to nothing and Cardiff managed to dominate the game despite having very little possession. Despite there being five changes to the starting lineup, there was a familiar feel to this game. As we messed around with the ball in our own defensive third, struggled to find openings in the final third and lost too many battles in the middle of the park. Here are a few of my thoughts on the game. Too many changes to the starting eleven Trying to second guess Carlos Corberán's team selection is a fool's errand, as I've found with my predicted lineups thi...

Misfiring Town, anti-Carlosball, stropping subs, xG, dark arts and lifting pessimism – Notes on the Derby win

Matches
Huddersfield Town managed to grind out a one-nil victory against a poor Derby side that have now lost five of their opening six games of the season. While it’s obvious that Derby are having a rough time, it’s still impressive that Town managed to get a win against a team packed full of players that are, on paper, better than ours. This win means that Town have earned 10 points out of the last 12 available and are sat comfortably in the top half of the table. It's too early to be getting carried away about Town's prospects but there is unquestionably a good feeling around the team now and Carlos' new approach is already bearing fruit. Winning despite misfiring This wasn't a great performance from Town in my opinion. We struggled to play through Derby's high press for long periods and our...

Huddersfield Town 1-3 Southampton – 7 thoughts on Town’s dismal defeat

Matches, Opinion
Watching Town lose isn’t a new experience this season but our 3-1 defeat to Southampton was hard to take. It was arguably Town’s worst performance of the season and we allowed a relegation rival to put breathing space between us and them. Here are a few of my thoughts following a bad day at the office for Town. Playing two strikers showed signs of promise but didn’t quite come off Town started the game in a slightly altered formation. We still had three central defenders, with wingbacks providing some width. Billing and Bacuna were paired in defensive midfield, with Pritchard slightly further forward behind a front line of Mounié and Mbenza. The combination of Mbenza’s pace and Mounié’s ability in the air has potential to be a successful partnership, but it didn’t quite work on Sat...

4 thoughts about Huddersfield Town’s 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace

Matches, Opinion
Huddersfield Town lost 1-0 to Crystal Palace at the weekend, in a result that David Wagner described as "unlucky". Town dominated possession, created several quality chances, but weren’t able to find a cutting edge in front of goal. Crystal Palace looked pretty average and Town played the better football, but Wilfried Zaha scored an individual goal that proved to be the difference between the two teams. Zaha needs to look in the mirror I get the feeling that Wilfried Zaha came into this game with an agenda to complain about the slightest bit of contact and try to get opposition players sent off. The only bad tackle he received was when Zanka was rightly booked for a poorly-timed tackle. Zaha’s post-match comments suggested he’s the victim of some widespread conspiracy to not send off ...
Five interesting stats from Huddersfield Town’s 3-0 defeat to Chelsea

Five interesting stats from Huddersfield Town’s 3-0 defeat to Chelsea

Matches, Opinion
There are lies, damn lies and statistics, or at least that’s how the saying goes. Regardless, I’ve had a trawl through the stats from Town’s defeat to Chelsea to see if there’s anything interesting to take away from it. Here are the stats that stood out to me... Hazard had six successful dribbles in his brief cameo Hazard was only on the pitch for a 15 minute cameo appearance towards the end, but in that time he ran rings around a tired and demoralised Town defence. A successful dribble means he took on an opposition player with the ball and came away cleanly. His six dribbles were more than any other player on the pitch, even though he only popped on for the last few minutes (and he only returned for preseason training last week). In case you were curious, no Town player manage...
Five thoughts about Town’s 3-0 victory over RB Leipzig

Five thoughts about Town’s 3-0 victory over RB Leipzig

Town turned in an impressive performance in their final friendly of preseason, beating RB Leipzig 3-0. Admittedly, our opposition had played a Europa League qualifier the night before and fielded a somewhat weakened team. But they still had Germany and Denmark’s first choice strikers from the World Cup up front, and a few multimillion Euro signings in their starting line up. Here are a few of my thoughts about the game… The 3-5-2 system worked well in its first outing of preseason This was the first time I’ve seen Town play with three central defenders for any length of time this preseason. It was a similar shape to the way we lined up towards the end of last season, and the system worked well. Everyone stuck to their task and there was no space for RB Leipzig to exploit. Zanka, Sch...
Five things I noticed in Town’s 2-1 win over Bologna

Five things I noticed in Town’s 2-1 win over Bologna

Matches, Opinion
Huddersfield Town scored in the last second of their friendly with Bologna to win the game 2-1. It was a fairly tepid encounter but there were some glimpses of decent football and I think the team look close to being ready for the start of the season. Here are a few things I noticed from the game... Sobhi showed his strength Ramadan Sobhi is incredibly strong on the ball for a winger. There were a few occasions where a Bologna defender tried to musle him off the ball and he just swatted them away. His close control looked very good, and he looked surprisingly speedy when chasing down balls. I wasn’t all that impressed with Ramadan in the Lyon friendly, but saw plenty to like about him in this game. The real test will obviously come in the Premier League, but the signs are there tha...

5 thoughts about Huddersfield Town’s incredible 1-0 win over Watford

Matches, Opinion
Wow! Town managed to pull off an unlikely 1-0 victory in a tight game against Watford that was decided by an exceptional moment in injury time. Tom Ince slotted home from close range after Zanka produced a wonderful square pass with the outside of his boot. Here are a few of my thoughts about the match... Not a classic game, but a good performance from Town Before Ince popped up with the winner the game seemed destined to for a 0-0 draw. Town put in a spirited performance but we had the same old problem of struggling to convert decent football into clear chances. Watford looked low on confidence and our pressing game forced them into making poor mistakes when attacking Town in the final third. We seemed the more aggressive and positive of the two teams but we didn’t manage a sh...

5 thoughts about Town’s draw with Brighton

Matches
Huddersfield Town came away from the south coast with a point after drawing 1-1 with Brighton. It could have been a victory for the Terriers after Brighton had a man sent off around the 75-minute mark. But Brighton missed some big chances so it could have been a defeat. Here are a few of my thoughts on the game. A much better performance from Town Last week’s defeat against Newcastle was disappointing because of the way Town played more than the result. We sat deep and invited the opposition onto us. Against Brighton Town were back to their aggressive pressing football and it made a difference. Town played more like the home team, dominating the game with 59% possession and notching up over 500 passes in the game. There were a lot more chances in the game too. We managed to get...

Talking points from Town’s draw with Stoke – The Collin Quaner Show

Matches
Huddersfield Town shared the points in their home game with Stoke, drawing 1-1. It was a hard-fought and well-balanced match which could have gone either way. Given both managers felt their side should have won it after the match, a draw is probably about right. Here are my thoughts on the match... Ince finally scores What a relief! Tom Ince has finally scored for Huddersfield Town. I’ve been tipping him to get off the mark soon since the summer, but the day finally arrived. It was a relatively simple chance, but he held his nerve and guided the ball home. This was the kind of lucky break he needed to get started. Now he’s off the mark I can see him being a new player. His all-round play has been good since arriving at Town, but his confidence has faded over the course of his barren sp...
