“Amateur defending” – Player ratings for Town’s 2-1 defeat to Bristol City

“Amateur defending” – Player ratings for Town’s 2-1 defeat to Bristol City

Matches
Town were beaten by Bristol despite an excellent second half display due to a pair of soft goals in the first half that gave our opponents an insurmountable lead. It was a game that was equally frustrating and promising as Town showed many of the consistent themes of this season, such as conceding sloppy goals, failing to finish chances and, on a more positive note, attacking, exciting football. Here are my player ratings. Ryan Schofield - 5 out of 10 I might be being a bit harsh but I thought he committed too early for the opener and made it too easy for the Bristol player to ease past him and finish into an open net. The second wasn't one he could so much about as it was a nice finish. The goals were the only shots on target for Bristol so he didn't make any other saves but did come o...

“Too sloppy” – Huddersfield Town player ratings following their 2-0 defeat to Watford

Matches
Huddersfield Town were beaten by a better opponent in yesterday’s game but it’s hard not to come away from the match wondering what might have happened. What if Deeney had been sent off in the first half? What if Schofield hadn’t misread Vallejo’s backpass? What if we had decent, experienced players on the bench to bring on when we fell behind? We’ll never know. So instead we’ve just got to mull over this defeat and put it behind us before we entertain Millwall on Wednesday night. Here are my player ratings. Ryan Schofield - 3 out of 10 There’s no nice way of saying it, his error cost us the game. I don’t think there’s a lot of benefit in finger pointing or shaming players for mistakes, it’s something to learn from and move on. He completely misjudged the pace of the ball, the speed of...
Player write ups after HTAFC’s FA Cup defeat to Plymouth and why I’m not giving player ratings out of 10

Player write ups after HTAFC’s FA Cup defeat to Plymouth and why I’m not giving player ratings out of 10

Matches
Huddersfield Town made eleven changes to their starting lineup and a youthful Terriers team fell to a 3-2 defeat against an almost full-strength Plymouth. While there’s a debate to be had about the wisdom of fielding such a weakened team and another about the true value of the FA Cup to teams like Town, I enjoyed the match and was pleased to see our academy lads given a chance. I usually give player ratings after Town games but I’ve decided to step away from that tradition for this particular game. It doesn’t feel fair to pass judgement on yesterday’s Town team with it featuring so many players at the start of their careers. Instead I’m going to just write a few sentences to summarise each player’s performance and I’ll leave the numbers out even though I’ll try and give a balanced summary...
“He didn’t do well enough in key moments” – Player ratings for Huddersfield Town’s 2-1 defeat to Reading

“He didn’t do well enough in key moments” – Player ratings for Huddersfield Town’s 2-1 defeat to Reading

Matches
Despite taking an early lead, Huddersfield Town were defeated by Reading yesterday in a game that saw Town play OK but far from their best. Reading looked like the livelier attacking force and on the day were able to produce two moments of quality that won them the game. Overall, I’m not too disappointed by this result and as Town have already amassed a decent number of points we can chalk this game down as fair enough and move on. Next week’s game against Plymouth should see the novelty of some of the squad players getting a run out and many of today’s first eleven getting a long-overdue rest after being worked very hard over the last few months. Here are my ratings for each player: Ryan Schofield - 7 out of 10 Made an amazing, point-blank save just before half time that prese...
“He was the difference between victory and defeat” – Player ratings for Huddersfield Town’s 2-1 win over Blackburn

“He was the difference between victory and defeat” – Player ratings for Huddersfield Town’s 2-1 win over Blackburn

Matches
Huddersfield Town scored an unexpected last-minute winner in last night's game against Blackburn. The game was entertaining to watch and featured two teams trying to play football the right way, even if it didn't always come off.  The win extends Town's impressive run of home victories to five and propels them into the top half of the table. While it needed Pipa and Naby Sarr to combine with an exceptional piece of play for the winner, I think the victory was just about deserved. Town weren’t perfect but did manage to do enough to come out worthy winners.  Ryan Schofield - 8 out of 10  The save from point blank range against Armstrong gets better with every replay. His positioning was excellent and his reflex save pulled the ball from behind him to stop it going in....
“Looked like he’d had too many mince pies” – Player ratings for Town’s Boxing Day defeat to Barnsley

“Looked like he’d had too many mince pies” – Player ratings for Town’s Boxing Day defeat to Barnsley

Matches
Huddersfield Town succumbed to a last minute defeat to Barnsley yesterday in a hard fought game that lacked quality football but was full of frenetic action. While the manner of the defeat was unlucky, it's hard to argue with the outcome when we had ridden our luck at times earlier in the game and failed to take our chances at the other end. In a season where there was more at stake, this result might have hurt but as we're already looking very likely to finish midtable it's hard for me to feel too upset. A draw would probably have been fair but you're always likely to lose if you defend balls into the box as poorly as we did for both of their goals. Here are my player ratings: Ryan Schofield - 7 out of 10 Some excellent saves and some less marvelous moments but balanced out to be rea...
“I’m hoping we extend his contract to fend off potential suitors” – Huddersfield Town player ratings for Watford victory

“I’m hoping we extend his contract to fend off potential suitors” – Huddersfield Town player ratings for Watford victory

Matches
Huddersfield Town beat Watford 2-0 on Saturday to nudge themselves into the top half of the table just in time for Christmas. The result came after some good fortune with both of our goals but it's hard to say it wasn't deserved after such a lot of work went into keeping Watford at bay. There still feels to be plenty of room for improvement with the team but there were signs of further progress in this game. We cut out costly defensive errors and forced a few out of the opposition. Here are my ratings for each player. Ryan Schofield - 8 out of 10 Made some excellent close range saves which he made look easy because of his good positioning. The young keeper was a key part of winning this game and looks like he may be ready for a longer run in the team. His distribution was mostly very g...
“Playing with a swagger” Player ratings for Huddersfield Town’s 2-0 victory over QPR

“Playing with a swagger” Player ratings for Huddersfield Town’s 2-0 victory over QPR

Matches
Huddersfield Town put in one of their best performances of the season in their win over QPR yesterday. It was almost like watching an exhibition of pass and move football for long spells of the game where Town completely dominated an unconvincing QPR side. Unsurprisingly, such a good team performance was a result of several individual players having excellent games and combining well together. Here’s what I thought of each player: Ben Hamer - 7 out of 10 Only had two saves to make and neither tested him but he made up for that lack of activity by playing some excellent passes out from the back. Rather than pass short every single time, he mixed up his passing by booting it long under pressure and when he had time to think about it he chipped some intelligent balls out to the fullback ar...

“I’m struggling to think of the thing he’s good at” – Player ratings for Huddersfield Town’s 3-0 defeat to Cardiff

Matches
Carlos Corberán made five changes to the starting lineup against Cardiff, showing that he’s willing to shake things up and try something different. The gamble largely failed and Town' turned in a poor performance and were deservedly beaten. Here’s how I rate each individual player from the night: Ben Hamer - 6 out of 10 Despite letting in three goals, he didn't have a particularly poor game. His distribution could be criticised but it's unfair to blame him for passing the ball short so much when it's clearly the explicit instruction from the bench for him to do that regardless of the pressure the defenders are under. Demeaco Duhaney - 4 out of 10 Another unimpressive performance from the right back. I'm struggling to think of the thing that he's good at. Neither attacking nor defendin...
“Not good enough for a player of his experience” – Player ratings from Hudersfield Town’s defeat to Stoke

“Not good enough for a player of his experience” – Player ratings from Hudersfield Town’s defeat to Stoke

Matches
Huddersfield Town lost to Stoke in an entertaining game that saw a clash of footballing philosophies where the more direct and physical team won over Town’s possession-based approach. The defeat was mostly the result of silly defensive mistakes and poor decisions in our own third but there were also plenty of positives to take from Town’s attacking play. There were some varied performances yesterday, with some players looking great and others struggling to find a rhythm. Here’s what I made of each individual player. Joel Pereira - 4 out of 10 Not the best debut for a keeper that had a lot to prove before he's even pulled on the shirt after the less than glowing references he received from Hearts fans who watched him last season. Could have done better with at least one but more likely t...
