“His blunders cost us the game” – Player ratings for Huddersfield Town’s 3-1 defeat to Barnsley

Matches, Player ratings
Huddersfield Town lost 3-1 to Barnsley on Saturday thanks mostly to Owen Goodman conceding the first due to a handling howler and then being sent off for an ill-judged charge out of his box that looked more like it belonged in professional wrestling rather than football. Though it has to be conceded that Town started poorly regardless of Goodman's antics and Barnsley deserved their lead, which they extended with a deflected goal that wrong footed Nicholls. The third for Barnsley came later in the second half after a spirited response from Town, this time a saved shot fell kindly for Keillor-Dunn to convert from close range.  It was a poor day for the majority of Town's players, who were put in an awful position by Goodman and the game was effectively over before half time.  ...

“A goal of the season contender” – Player ratings for Huddersfield Town’s penalty win over Sunderland

Matches, Player ratings
Huddersfield Town made it through to the third round of the League Cup after knocking out Premier League new boys Sunderland on penalties. Town put in an almost flawless first half performance for a team playing against an opponent from a higher league, with Leo Castledine’s sublime strike the icing on the cake of an already great team performance. The second half involved a lot more hanging on and Sunderland had more chances than the one they scored. But Town held their shape well and eventually clawed their way back into the game enough to have chances to win it themselves in the dying stages.  The scores might not reflect a brilliant win against Premier League opposition but the real star of this performance (apart from Leo Castledine) was the collective effort of the team to work ha...

“It’s not a bald patch, it’s a solar panel for a passing machine!” Player ratings for Huddersfield Town’s 1-0 win over Stevenage

Matches, Player ratings
Huddersfield Town were deserved winners against Stevenage in a game where they were consistently on top but struggled to carve out clear cut opportunities. An Alfie May goal, his first from open play for Town, was enough to clinch the three points after a late and limited fightback Stevenage put us under mild pressure.  Despite Stevenage being top of the league before the start of the match, they were not the fierce opponents I was expecting and Town did a good job of limiting their attacking influence and keeping them on the back foot until their late pressure in the closing moments.  Here's what I made of each individual performance… Owen Goodman - 7 out of 10 His passing was very good and I'm now trying to accept that passing out from the back is how we do things. ...

“The bench made the difference” – Player ratings for Huddersfield Town’s 2-0 win over Doncaster Rovers

Matches, Player ratings
Huddersfield Town beat Doncaster Rovers 2-0 on Tuesday night in a game where they had to cling on for dear life in the early stages before growing into the game in the second half and coming out on top. Our first half struggles were partly down to Doncaster being unexpectedly superb but we also had a lot of issues with getting out of our own half at times too. The strength of Town’s bench made the difference in the end, with Wiles making the breakthrough and Taylor sealing the win after both came on halfway through the second half.  Here are my thoughts on each individual performance… Owen Goodman - 6 out of 10 Made a howler by passing directly to their man which was mercifully not punished. Resorted to long, hopeless punts downfield too often that Alfie May had no chance of ...

“Got a lot wrong” – Player ratings for Huddersfield Town’s 3-2 defeat to Blackpool

Matches, Player ratings
Huddersfield Town tasted defeat for the first time this season after losing 3-2 to Blackpool despite playing against ten men for the best part of an hour. A calamitous period in the middle of the first half saw Town go from 1-0 up to 3-1 down and the red card that ended Blackpool's period of dominance led to an unpleasant finish for Town as they huffed and puffed but couldn't break down Blackpool's impressive defence. This defeat may be useful to bring down the skyrocketing expectations that our first three wins brought (including my own) but will hopefully only be a blip rather than anything more concerning.  Here's what I made of each performance… Owen Goodman - 5 out of 10 Looked like he should have done better with the first goal, even accounting for the deflection. Th...

“Like a glitching video game character stuck in celebration mode” – Player ratings for Huddersfield Town’s penalty win against Leicester in the League Cup

Huddersfield Town came from behind twice to take Leicester to penalties on Wednesday night in the first round for the League Cup. The game was a tense tactical battle in the first half before opening up into a genuinely exciting and well matched game. Despite making a raft of changes to the team, Lee Grant managed to get another good performance to maintain his 100% win rate with the Terriers for a third game.  Or can you call it a 100% record if we won the game on penalties? Technically the game was a 2-2 draw at full time, so maybe he's won two and drawn one. It doesn't really matter, as Town won the penalty shootout 3-2 with a kick to spare and created a huge buzz in the stadium. Here's what I made of each player's performance… Lee Nicholls - 7 out of 10 Looked uncomfortabl...

“Showed the desire needed” – Player ratings for Huddersfield Town’s 2-0 win over Reading

Matches, Player ratings
Huddersfield Town made it two wins in two with their 2-0 victory against Reading on Saturday lunchtime. The game was finely poised, with both teams being too wasteful in the final third despite the two teams trying to play good football. Thankfully, two set piece goals won the game for Town but it could have been a different story if Reading had taken their chances at the other end. I’m not sure I’d call it lucky though, as a game between two well-matched opponents will usually be decided by fine margins and Town made the most of their chances and Reading didn't. Collectively, Town weren’t quite as good as they were in their opening game but we were away from home against a good League One team, so perhaps that was to be expected. I thought Town would need quite a few games to get up to...

“I’ve probably gone a bit overboard” – Player ratings for Huddersfield Town’s 3-0 win over Leyton Orient

Matches, Player ratings
I gave up doing player ratings a few seasons ago but thought I'd bring this format out of retirement for this new era of Huddersfield Town. There are problems with trying to boil down 16 different performances into numbers between one and ten, it's too blunt an instrument to really capture what happened and every single fan watching a game has different opinions. However, it's an excuse to talk about the various players involved in a game, so I'm not going to over think it.  This article covers Huddersfield Town's 3-0 win over Leyton Orient on Saturday and looking back I've probably gone a bit overboard with my scores here. Town outplayed Leyton Orient and deserved to win but it wasn't exactly a fluent or completely dominant performance. On the other hand, context matters and the s...

“Cumbersome and off the pace” – Player ratings for Huddersfield Town’s opening day defeat to Plymouth Argyle

Matches
Huddersfield Town came away from the south coast empty handed, after falling to a 3-1 defeat to Plymouth Argyle on the opening day of the season. It was a mildly infuriating result, as while the defeat was deserved, Town were the architects of their own downfall with poor finishing and sloppy mistakes the biggest factors in why they lost. Plymouth deserve credit too, because they exploited our weaknesses and finished their chances but this still felt like an avoidable defeat. Having said that, there were some positives to be taken from the game. It’s easy to think the sky is falling in after this sort of result but there were glimmers of hope for optimists to cling on to in this performance. And I’d be genuinely stunned if we concede three goals as bad as that in a game again this seaso...

“His killer instinct has abandoned him and his time at Huddersfield is up” Player ratings for Town’s defeat to Watford

Matches
Town were well beaten in the end by Watford, although they put up a decent fight for at least half an hour they ultimately couldn't cope with the quality, strength and speed of their opponent. It wasn't a complete hammering but the scoreline perhaps flatters Town as Watford has a clear penalty shout turned down in the first half and spurned some glorious scoring opportunities.  It wasn't all gloom though, as Town showed some nice moments against a strong opponent that hints at the possibility that we might look a bit better when we're up against teams with fewer superstar (for the Championship) players. Here are my ratings for each individual player in yesterday's game. Lee Nicholls - 8 out of 10 Stopped what looked like a certain goal as well as pulling off some other mor...
