A Taylor-made victory, a turgid game, mugged off dot com, and the football gods intervention – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 2-1 win over Cambridge United

Huddersfield Town were unconvincing in their 2-1 win over Cambridge on Saturday but they found a way to win, as the saying goes. Joe Taylor popped up with two late goals after Town went behind to Cambridge towards the end of the second half. In fact, nearly all of the game's highlights occurred in the final fifteen minutes and everything before the 82nd minute was pretty dreary stuff to watch. Cambridge United were a tricky opponent and I think their tenacity and awkwardness led to a number of Town's players underperforming. The accepted wisdom is that it's bad to play freshly promoted teams early in a new season because they carry through their momentum from the previous successful campaign. Huddersfield Town take on Cambridge United on Saturday afternoon and will hope that they can continue their unbeaten start in League One. We're still finding out what kind of team Martin Drury's Huddersfield Town are going to be this season but the early indicators are promising with a few nagging doubts. The attacking side of Town's game has been particularly impressive, with Fletcher being the exact kind of striker we've been missing for years, Fernandes looking like an exciting player with genuine goal threat and Joe Taylor suddenly looks like the player we hoped he would be when we first signed him. In defence of Taylor, Drury is the first manager to play to Taylor's strengths, so it's not exactly a surprise that he's looking more dangerous when the service he's receiving helps him...

The best performance of the season – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 4-0 win over Cambridge United

Last night Huddersfield Town beat Cambridge United 4-0 in the best performance of the season (so far). While we’ve seen glimmers of what the team is capable under Michael Duff, it’s rare that we’ve played well for long stretches in a game, so this was the most complete performance I’ve seen from Town in a long time. Most likely back in the Corberan days. Everyone had at least a decent game and several players were excellent on the night, which led to some very nice attractive football, capped off with the goals we deserved. There were other pleasing elements beyond the pretty football and abundance of goals, such as the way we absorbed pressure when they pressed our defenders or how the midfield controlled play and dictated the pace of the game. Predicted Huddersfield Town XI to take on Cambridge United

Huddersfield Town take on Cambridge United on Friday night in a game that was moved from Saturday afternoon to Friday night but seemingly won’t be broadcast on Sky Sports. I saw a comment on Facebook saying that it was moved to give players an extra day between this game and Boxing Day. Cambridge United had the option to let Sky screen the match but declined, presumably out of fear it would reduce the attendance. Moving this fixture to a Friday then not allowing it to be screened on TV for fans who can’t make it seems bonkers to me. In a world where most forms of entertainment are making themselves as accessible as possible, it feels like football often goes out of its way to make it hard for supporters to enjoy watching their team.
