A sloppy start, ifs and buts, howlers and the managerial dress code – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 3-1 defeat at Barnsley

Town tasted defeat for the second time this season when they lost 3-1 to Barnsley on Saturday. There were a few reasons that this game went the wrong way for the Terriers but Owen Goodman’s error for the opener and the rash challenge that led to his red card were the principal reasons we lost.  Barnsley were surprisingly good and deserved the win. They played a similar system to Town's but did it better. Obviously this was made easier by playing ten men but they also dominated the game when Town had a full complement of players on the pitch.  Here are a few of my thoughts on the game.  A sloppy start  Before I get to the red card, I want to cover how badly Town started this game. We looked half asleep and Barnsley were completely outplaying us. Far too many ...

“His blunders cost us the game” – Player ratings for Huddersfield Town’s 3-1 defeat to Barnsley

Huddersfield Town lost 3-1 to Barnsley on Saturday thanks mostly to Owen Goodman conceding the first due to a handling howler and then being sent off for an ill-judged charge out of his box that looked more like it belonged in professional wrestling rather than football. Though it has to be conceded that Town started poorly regardless of Goodman's antics and Barnsley deserved their lead, which they extended with a deflected goal that wrong footed Nicholls. The third for Barnsley came later in the second half after a spirited response from Town, this time a saved shot fell kindly for Keillor-Dunn to convert from close range.  It was a poor day for the majority of Town's players, who were put in an awful position by Goodman and the game was effectively over before half time.  ...

Predicted Huddersfield Town XI to take on Barnsley

Huddersfield Town are in South Yorkshire today to take on Barnsley this afternoon, probably the local derby that I’ve seen Town compete in most during my time supporting the club. Leeds and Bradford are more fierce rivalries but Barnsley have been operating in the same league as Town more often than those two so are a more familiar foe.  The timing of this fixture catches both teams in a good moment, with Town winning four of their first five games and Barnsley only two points worse off, with three wins, a draw and a defeat from their opening five league outings. Both have navigated two rounds of the League Cup too. So hopefully we’ll see two teams in good form, having a real go at it.  Lee Grant has a few welcome selection headaches, after making ten changes for the cup in...

Barnsley’s false position, a huge away following, getting over Herbie & a friendly rivalry? Talking points ahead of Huddersfield Town’s game against Barnsley

Huddersfield Town take on Barnsley on Saturday afternoon, in another Yorkshire derby for the Terriers. More interestingly, it’s a contest between two teams that have had good starts to the season and are currently at the top end of the table. Barnsley lost at Wimbledon last weekend but were undefeated until that point and are only two points behind Huddersfield Town.  Both teams have managers that are new to the job, want to play an attacking type of football, want their team to press the opposition, and from what I can see, Barnsley’s appointment of Conor Hourihane has helped to repair the relationship between club and fans, which had become strained in recent disappointing seasons, just like we’ve experienced at Town. So it should be an interesting encounter between two teams tha...

What a difference a game can make! After the gloom was starting to gather over Town following four consecutive defeats, the team put in a much-needed display against Barnsley on Saturday, winning 2-0 and deservingly coming out on top. While one game doesn't change everything and the problems we've seen in recent games could still be festering under the surface, this game did feel significant beyond the result and could potentially act as a turning point in the season. It will hopefully mark the end of our poor run and be a transition into a happier spell for Michael Duff and his squad of players. Here are some of my thoughts from the game. Town dominated the first half without getting their reward Like the way heavyweight boxers will probe with their jabs in the early rounds of...

Huddersfield Town can confirm their entry to the playoffs with a win tonight over Barnsley. In fact, it's possible we could be certain of finishing in the top six if other results go our way even without a victory. Our opponents find themselves at the other end of the table and have to win to avoid confirming their relegation to League One. So plenty at stake in the Yorkshire derby!  Dialing down the hype a notch, Barnsley are almost certain to go down and Town are similarly likely to qualify for the playoffs. It’s not quite a dead rubber but I feel like I was a bit over the top in the opening paragraph. Regardless, it's likely to be a competitive game and there are, as the saying goes, no easy games in the Championship. Carlos has said he intends to name a strong lineup tonight, s...

I started this blog because I didn't think there was that much coverage of Town that I liked. It was back in the days of The Examiner being pretty dire, the club didn't do much more than post press conferences to YouTube and there wasn't loads of stuff made by fans about games. Thankfully that's changed a lot over the years and there are now almost too many articles, videos and podcasts to digest after a game and that's before you consider all the interesting bits and pieces knocking around on social media. This article is a bit of an experiment to try and pull together some of the best coverage of Town after their FA Cup victory over Barnsley at the weekend. I'd be genuinely interested to know if you find this stuff interesting. Please put your thoughts in the comments below. If it's n...

Huddersfield Town will face Nottingham Forest away in the next round of the cup after their victory over Barnsley saw them into the last 16. Like most of Town's recent games, against Barnsley there were good bits, bad bits and some key moments that went Town’s way.  Town's unbeaten run is now standing at 12 games and it's hard to ignore the fact that this team are pretty good. For all the fears of doom and relegation at the start of the season, if we can beat a team that are currently below us in the league table in the next round we'll be in the quarter finals and one game away from a semi-final at Wembley. Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself but surely that's part of the magic of the cup.  Anyway, here are a few of my thoughts on the game.  A deserved win that could...

Huddersfield Town qualified for the next round of the FA Cup by beating Barnsley 1-0 yesterday. It wasn’t vintage Town but they just about deserved the win and could actually have been more comfortable winners if they had been less wasteful in front of goal.  It was a mixed bag in terms of individual performances, with some players really catching the eye and several not looking up to speed. Getting into the hat for the next round was the main objective and Town managed that, so there’s no use complaining too much.  Here are my player ratings for the game. Jamal Blackman - 6 out of 10 Barnsley failed to register a single shot on target in the game, so there wasn’t much opportunity for Blackman to show off his shot stopping credentials. He looked good otherwise, with some decent...

Predicted Huddersfield Town XI to take on Barnsley in the FA Cup

Huddersfield Town take on Barnsley in the FA Cup this afternoon. Town’s recent history in the cups has been shocking, so even getting into the fourth round has been an achievement but given Barnsley’s grim recent form and Town’s current unbeaten run, today represents a very good opportunity to progress even further in the cup. As usual, Carlos Corberan has made all the right noises in the build up to the game about respecting the competition and picking a strong side. But we know from history that we can most likely ignore that and expect to see a much changed team this afternoon from the one that played against Derby in midweek. At least Town’s squad this season is big enough to have quality backup in the majority of areas on the pitch and we should still field a decent team. Here’s...
