Injury updates, praising Holmes, being “self demanding”, Carlos losing his voice – Pre-Preston presser bullet points

In another attempt to expand the kind of thing I write about on the blog, I’m going to put together a summary of the main points from Carlos Corberán’s press conference ahead of tonight’s game.

It’s obvious from the views these videos get on YouTube that not every fan watches these conferences but there’s usually some useful information in them.

Here are the main points:

  • The first half against Barnsley was good but we should have scored more. We lost control of the game in the second half because we couldn’t cope with Barnsley changing shape.
  • Carlos praised the backup players that came in last weekend and that some of them are unlucky not to have had more chances.
  • Pipa had a scan yesterday and it was positive news. He’s injured for tonight but could feature after the Sheffield United game.
  • Carel Eiting is in consideration to start in the league and is an important player for us. (But he’s likely to be on the bench for now.)
  • Holmes is doing well at the moment, mostly because of his character and contributions from the bench.
  • Carlos isn’t interested in whether the press write is off or not.
  • Levi Colwill will rejoin training with the squad after the Sheffield United game.
  • Steven Chicken and Carlos got into the weeds about selecting the right balance of substitutes. I’m disappointed neither talked about Carlos’ love of bringing on Turton around 70 minutes in any given game regardless of the situation.
  • Hogg’s form after injury – he’s getting better as he regains full fitness and is a big character to have in the team. Corberán them gives him the worst kind of compliment by admiring how he keeps going even when it’s going wrong for him.
  • Is extra competition in the squad encouraging them to be more “self demanding”? No, because those are external factors. He wants players to push themselves to be better for themselves not because of anything else that is going on.
  • Corberán lost his voice a lot last season but this season he is listening more than talking (i.e shouting). Suggesting the players are taking more responsibility and need less of his input.
  • Around 22 minutes in there’s a funny moment where Carlos gets caught up in talking about the relationship between results and performances and completely forgets the question. He then rambles his way through a confusing answer that attempts to boil down all the factors involved in our recent good form.

Thank you, TS. I certainly wouldn’t have bothered to watch it.
I couldn’t help but click on an old link from last August when you predicted the Town team to play PNE in the home fixture. I was curious to see what changes are likely from your predicted starting Xl (whether that was the actual starting Xl I don’t know – unlikely as you rarely get it 100% right). Anyway, we can exclude Colwill due to injury, surely CC won’t pick Sarr (?), I can’t see him picking High nor Campbell. Of the other 7, Koroma may give way to Sinani and I wonder if CC will risk leaving out Hogg for Russell? Unlikely but I’d like to see it. Does form trump experience?
There’s no real purpose to this comment other than to show that the side has certainly developed since August.

The reason that I do not watch Carlos’s interviews is that I cannot really understand what he is saying. I would rather read his comments

  • I love watching Carlos. Don’t always understand him, but love the passion and detail – this guy lives, eats, sleeps(?) football.
Thanks for the bullets though – really good to scan.
Have you seen the Leigh Bromby interview? I know it ain’t perfect, but we seem to building something.
I also reminded myself of some of our results under DW and even he got battered away at PNE and Fulham, so I’d take 4 points from the next three games then 12 from the next four.
