Danny Cowley was Huddersfield Town manager until he was unceremoniously sacked a couple of days after guiding Town to Championship safety last July. Now he’s doing corporate gigs for ScrewFix Direct.
Cowley answered some heavily curated questions taken from fans on Twitter and then played a couple of slightly cringe-inducing games involving the ScrewFix catalogue, some ping pong balls and mugs.
Did Danny Cowley reveal anything in the Q&A section about his time at Town?
In short, no. Despite there being plenty of probing questions on Twitter from Town fans about Cowley’s Huddersfield Town career, they didn’t make the cut and the questions didn’t get any harder than “who were the best fans at the clubs you’ve managed” (he gave a diplomatic non-answer where he complimented all the fans).
In Cowley’s defence, it wasn’t the forum where you would expect hard hitting questions and warts-and-all answers.
What were the challenges?
Cowley had a ScrewFix catalogue and was challenged by presenter Jacqui Oatley called out products for him to find against the clock. This was the part that felt most like a scene from I’m Alan Partridge. Cowley did well to identify various products in the catalogue but disappointingly didn’t manage to reference where you could get shop soiled Terry’s Chocolate Oranges (Rawlinson’s).
The final task was a brand-safe equivalent of beer pong they called tea pong where Cowley had to film himself chucking ping pong balls into ScrewFix branded mugs. In this task he showed his insatiable desire to win at all costs when he clearly breached to the rules by standing too close to the mugs and, under questioning, confessed to recording multiple takes until he got a decent score.
Why did Cowley do this corporate event?
I’d guess this would have been a paid gig and it was easy work to just answer some softball questions and play a couple of silly games. It also helps keep Cowley’s profile up and shows he’s available for work.
I actually quite enjoyed seeing Cowley again and it made me realise how much I liked him both as a manager and a person when he was in charge of Town.
I really hope that he and his brother Nicky get back into managing again soon and I suspect they’ll do well. I just hope it doesn’t come at Huddersfield Town’s expense.
Where can I watch the video of this event?
Here’s the video:
Sue Cook couldn’t make it.
