“A goal of the season contender” – Player ratings for Huddersfield Town’s penalty win over Sunderland

Huddersfield Town made it through to the third round of the League Cup after knocking out Premier League new boys Sunderland on penalties. Town put in an almost flawless first half performance for a team playing against an opponent from a higher league, with Leo Castledine’s sublime strike the icing on the cake of an already great team performance. The second half involved a lot more hanging on and Sunderland had more chances than the one they scored. But Town held their shape well and eventually clawed their way back into the game enough to have chances to win it themselves in the dying stages. “It’s not a bald patch, it’s a solar panel for a passing machine!” Player ratings for Huddersfield Town’s 1-0 win over Stevenage

Huddersfield Town were deserved winners against Stevenage in a game where they were consistently on top but struggled to carve out clear cut opportunities. An Alfie May goal, his first from open play for Town, was enough to clinch the three points after a late and limited fightback Stevenage put us under mild pressure. Despite Stevenage being top of the league before the start of the match, they were not the fierce opponents I was expecting and Town did a good job of limiting their attacking influence and keeping them on the back foot until their late pressure in the closing moments. “The bench made the difference” – Player ratings for Huddersfield Town’s 2-0 win over Doncaster Rovers

Huddersfield Town beat Doncaster Rovers 2-0 on Tuesday night in a game where they had to cling on for dear life in the early stages before growing into the game in the second half and coming out on top. Our first half struggles were partly down to Doncaster being unexpectedly superb but we also had a lot of issues with getting out of our own half at times too. The strength of Town’s bench made the difference in the end, with Wiles making the breakthrough and Taylor sealing the win after both came on halfway through the second half. “Got a lot wrong” – Player ratings for Huddersfield Town’s 3-2 defeat to Blackpool

Huddersfield Town tasted defeat for the first time this season after losing 3-2 to Blackpool despite playing against ten men for the best part of an hour. A calamitous period in the middle of the first half saw Town go from 1-0 up to 3-1 down and the red card that ended Blackpool's period of dominance led to an unpleasant finish for Town as they huffed and puffed but couldn't break down Blackpool's impressive defence. This defeat may be useful to bring down the skyrocketing expectations that our first three wins brought (including my own) but will hopefully only be a blip rather than anything more concerning. “Like a glitching video game character stuck in celebration mode” – Player ratings for Huddersfield Town’s penalty win against Leicester in the League Cup

Huddersfield Town came from behind twice to take Leicester to penalties on Wednesday night in the first round for the League Cup. The game was a tense tactical battle in the first half before opening up into a genuinely exciting and well matched game. Despite making a raft of changes to the team, Lee Grant managed to get another good performance to maintain his 100% win rate with the Terriers for a third game. Or can you call it a 100% record if we won the game on penalties? Technically the game was a 2-2 draw at full time, so maybe he's won two and drawn one. It doesn't really matter, as Town won the penalty shootout 3-2 with a kick to spare and created a huge buzz in the stadium. “Showed the desire needed” – Player ratings for Huddersfield Town’s 2-0 win over Reading

Huddersfield Town made it two wins in two with their 2-0 victory against Reading on Saturday lunchtime. The game was finely poised, with both teams being too wasteful in the final third despite the two teams trying to play good football. Thankfully, two set piece goals won the game for Town but it could have been a different story if Reading had taken their chances at the other end. I’m not sure I’d call it lucky though, as a game between two well-matched opponents will usually be decided by fine margins and Town made the most of their chances and Reading didn't. Collectively, Town weren’t quite as good as they were in their opening game but we were away from home against a good League One team, so perhaps that was to be expected. I gave up doing player ratings a few seasons ago but thought I'd bring this format out of retirement for this new era of Huddersfield Town. There are problems with trying to boil down 16 different performances into numbers between one and ten, it's too blunt an instrument to really capture what happened and every single fan watching a game has different opinions. However, it's an excuse to talk about the various players involved in a game, so I'm not going to over think it. This article covers Huddersfield Town's 3-0 win over Leyton Orient on Saturday and looking back I've probably gone a bit overboard with my scores here.
