Some random thoughts about Huddersfield Town’s 1-0 victory over Bradford City

Some random thoughts about Huddersfield Town’s 1-0 victory over Bradford City

In Liam Manning’s first game as manager, we saw a team playing with the parts of the game that we’ve been badly missing for the majority of this season. Grit, fight, bravery and energy were the qualities that stood out over the 90 minutes, which gave Town the platform to then play quality football at times too. It was the sort of front-foot, aggressive football that we’d been promised under the banner of “Northern Football” even though the reality under Lee Grant was a far more tepid and sanitised version.  It’s been a struggle to find time to do writeups about Huddersfield Town recently, so this article is a bit of an experiment. Here are my random thoughts on Town’s brilliant 1-0 victory over Bradford City.  How the game unfolded Town made a brilliant, positive start w...

Wallace overlooked, a battling performance, window shopping & softball interviews – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 1-1 draw with Lincoln

Huddersfield Town managed to come away from Sincil Bank with a point following their 1-1 draw with Lincoln. You can question whether a team with our aspirations should be satisfied scraping a draw against Lincoln but that mentality wouldn't acknowledge the quality Lincoln play with, their current run of excellent form and that we can't expect teams to roll over for us just because we're Huddersfield Town. Lincoln carved us open time after time in the first half but wayward finishing and good work from Nicholls kept us in the game. We then grew into the game in the second half, taking the lead through Leo Castledine before being pegged back thanks to being outmuscled at a set piece. A fair result and decent performance, even if both could have been better. Alfie May looked like he was...

Tactical injury breaks, a breathtaking start, in-form strikers and Bojan’s straight fringe – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 3-1 win over Mansfield

Huddersfield Town continued their good run of form with a 3-1 win against Mansfield on Saturday. We’ve now won our last three consecutive games after a run of one win in eight games. While it’s probably too soon to be getting carried away, the style of play and the goals we’ve been scoring hint towards the kind of football we all hoped we’d be seeing this season under Lee Grant.  You could argue that beating Mansfield twice and a woeful Plymouth team shouldn’t be cause to start planning a promotion party for next May, but there is at least a glimmer of what this squad is capable of. What’s even more interesting is that the players most instrumental in this turnaround have been fringe players that have been called upon because of injuries mounting up, alongside some of the expected ...

Lee Grant hanging by a thread, Kevin Nagle feeds the trolls, how not to play with ten men and red card thoughts – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 3-0 defeat to Wycombe

It's been a few days now since Huddersfield Town lost 3-0 to Wycombe and the passing of time hasn't made this result more palatable. In fact, if I was to describe this game as a meal in a restaurant, it would be a bucket of hot sick with something unmentionable floating in it as a crouton. It is tempting to say this is the worst performance since a long while back but the sad truth is that it's only the worst defeat since the last defeat, when we threw away a 1-0 lead by allowing two stoppage time goals. But, for a team with Town's aspirations, we really shouldn't be turning in so many horrible performances. You can only get away with calling a poor performance "a bad day at the office" so many times. If you're continually having bad days at the office, maybe they're not isolated incide...

Duff-esque, trigger happy Town fans, Grant’s rose tinted specs and Roosken’s towel – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 0-0 draw with Burton Albion

In a game where Town fans hoped to see this team bounce back from defeat to Bradford, Huddersfield Town stumbled to a 0-0 draw with bottom-of-the-table Burton Albion on Saturday. Town were a bit unlucky to see a flurry of late chances either cleared off the line or just miss the target but the need to push for a late winner was due to Town making a hash of the first hour of the game.  Draws can generate a variety of feelings but this one definitely falls into the two points dropped category. And while the league table doesn't look too bad, it's a bigger concern that we've looked poor in recent games.  Here are a few of my thoughts on the game…. Duff-esque This game felt a lot like watching Michael Duff’s Huddersfield Town of last season. The dour football, the inability to...

I tried to leave it a bit longer than usual to do an in depth write up of Huddersfield Town’s 3-1 defeat to Bradford, in the hope that giving it time to settle might make it not seem quite such a bad defeat. That’s not helped though and I think this was the most embarrassing defeat I’ve seen Town fall to since the FA Cup exit to Tamworth, after we couldn’t cope with Tommy Tonks’ long throws.   It’s rare that Town defeats bother me too much, there have been enough of them over the years to help me get used to the feeling. This defeat did hurt though, as we failed to show up for a game against one of our biggest rivals. I’d have accepted being outplayed on the day (which we were) but the way we were out fought and out thought was terribly bad.  After spending months buil...

Ferguson’s histrionics, first half struggles, turning it around and needing a break – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 3-2 win over Peterborough

Huddersfield Town came from behind to win 3-2 against Peterborough on Saturday afternoon. Town struggled to overcome an organised and committed approach from Peterborough and it wasn't until Castledine and Alves were subbed on did we really get a good grip on this game. Three goals during this dominant spell meant the late goal from Peterborough was merely a consolation prize and the three points stayed in Huddersfield.  If you're a glass half full person, then you'll focus on the huge improvement we made later in the game but skeptical fans will have seen plenty to set off alarm bells in that opening hour. Maybe these issues are merely teething problems in a team that's gone through a great deal of change. Maybe it's the fault lines showing in fundamental flaws in Lee Grant's syst...

Should U21s play in the EFL trophy?, socks, haircuts and a mismatch – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 6-2 win over Newcastle U21s

Huddersfield Town beat Newcastle United’s Under 21 6-2 on Tuesday night and the scoreline, if anything, flatters Newcastle United’s youngsters as it was clear from the first 30 seconds of this game that Town would be comfortable winners.  Even though the opposition was modest, Town remained professional and put in a disciplined performance where they did enough to convincingly beat their opponent without having to push themselves too hard.  I said in the player ratings article that this is a match that it’s hard to draw too many conclusions from but I’m going to have a go anyway… Leo Castledine was Town's best player on the night` A clear mismatch Winning by a four-goal margin might seem like a flattering result for the winning team but I think it’s the other way a...

A sloppy start, ifs and buts, howlers and the managerial dress code – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 3-1 defeat at Barnsley

Town tasted defeat for the second time this season when they lost 3-1 to Barnsley on Saturday. There were a few reasons that this game went the wrong way for the Terriers but Owen Goodman’s error for the opener and the rash challenge that led to his red card were the principal reasons we lost.  Barnsley were surprisingly good and deserved the win. They played a similar system to Town's but did it better. Obviously this was made easier by playing ten men but they also dominated the game when Town had a full complement of players on the pitch.  Here are a few of my thoughts on the game.  A sloppy start  Before I get to the red card, I want to cover how badly Town started this game. We looked half asleep and Barnsley were completely outplaying us. Far too many ...

Castledine or Carss?, a textbook performance, penalty heroics and cup benefits – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s cup win over Sunderland

Matches, Notes
After beating a top-end Championship opposition in the first round, Huddersfield Town knocked out Premier League Sunderland in their second round game of the league cup. And while some may quibble that Town needed penalties in both games, the fact they have won two penalty shootouts can only be good experience. While we don't want to rely on the lottery of the playoffs to go up this season, if we end up in that situation we will benefit from recent penalty experience. As much as you can practise the technical skill of taking a penalty, nothing compares to doing in a stadium with real pressure (even if the League Cup is a good bit lower stakes than a playoff shootout). There was an awful lot to like about this Town performance and very little to grumble about. There’s a risk that some fa...
