Predicted Huddersfield Town XI to take on Bradford City

Matches, Predicted lineups
Huddersfield Town renew their rivalry with Bradford City on Saturday lunchtime after over a decade since they last met. Even putting aside the fact this is a local derby, it's third playing fifth in the League One table, so it's a game where two of the better teams in the league face off against each other.  Town will need to be at their best to get something from this game and that means picking the right team to start the game. In recent weeks, it’s been the strength of our bench that has helped us out in games but I’m hoping for the initial selection to be a bit better in this game to reduce the need to be bailed out by the subs.  Here’s how I think we’ll line up… Goalkeeper - Nicholls  Owen Goodman has another couple of games left on his ban, so it’s Lee Nicholls ...

Cringey social media, first half issues, Grant’s selection headaches and a feisty match – Talking points for Huddersfield Town’s game against Bradford City

Huddersfield Town make the short trip to Valley Parade to take on Bradford City on Saturday lunchtime to renew their local rivalry. These two teams haven’t played against each other in 12 years and it’s 17 years since we played in the same league as them. Bradford City have spent a long time in the doldrums and as a result there are a generation of Huddersfield Town fans that haven’t seen these two rivals on the pitch together. Both teams find themselves at the upper end of the table after each has had a decent start to the season. Town are a point ahead of Bradford as it stands, so whoever wins this game will be above the other in the table as well as having local bragging rights.  Here are a few of the talking points ahead of this game… Will it be a feisty encounter? ...

Ferguson’s histrionics, first half struggles, turning it around and needing a break – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 3-2 win over Peterborough

Matches, Notes
Huddersfield Town came from behind to win 3-2 against Peterborough on Saturday afternoon. Town struggled to overcome an organised and committed approach from Peterborough and it wasn't until Castledine and Alves were subbed on did we really get a good grip on this game. Three goals during this dominant spell meant the late goal from Peterborough was merely a consolation prize and the three points stayed in Huddersfield.  If you're a glass half full person, then you'll focus on the huge improvement we made later in the game but skeptical fans will have seen plenty to set off alarm bells in that opening hour. Maybe these issues are merely teething problems in a team that's gone through a great deal of change. Maybe it's the fault lines showing in fundamental flaws in Lee Grant's syst...

Player ratings for Huddersfield Town’s 3-2 win over Peterborough

Huddersfield Town struggled against Peterborough yesterday but managed to get their act together after going 1-0 down, scoring three goals before Peterborough's late consolation goal made it 3-2. The drab first hour of the game raises concerns but the final half an hour had plenty of entertainment and dynamism.  So this game was a real Jekyll and Hyde performance, with most of Towns' best players coming off the bench to turn the tide.  Lee Nicholls - 6 out of 10 At the time of writing, I've not seen replays of either Peterborough goals but the first looked like another horrendous deflection and the second saw the ball go to the far post, so Nicholls couldn't get across. Three deflected goals in three games seems like rotten luck but I wonder if we're dropping too deep to...

Predicted Huddersfield Town XI to take on Peterborough

Huddersfield Town take on Peterborough this afternoon at the Accu Stadium. Peterborough are usually a strong League One team but this season they have picked up a solitary point from their opening five games and have only scored two goals in those outings.  Lee Grant has spoken about needing to be cautious of Peterborough as they are better than their current league position suggests. There were also a handful of deadline day signings that will make them stronger. Yet, I can’t help but feel a convincing victory is needed from Town to get their promotion push back on the road after faltering at Barnsley last weekend.  Thankfully, Lee Grant has some tough choices in picking his starting eleven due to our strong squad and relatively small injury list. New loan signings Zepi Richmon...

A festering rivalry, new player availability, Nicholls’ big chance and woeful Posh – Talking points for Huddersfield Town v Peterborough

Huddersfield Town are hosting Peterborough United on Saturday afternoon. With the away side in horrendous form, it looks like a good opportunity for Town to bounce back from their defeat to Barnsley last weekend. Past history tells us that we always struggle against teams we expect to beat, so don't count your chickens just yet! We're still working out what kind of a team this new-look Town actually are this season, so maybe we're not that team that gives other clubs a chance to recover from bad runs. Maybe that's the old Town and we're now ruthlessly efficient at dispatching poor teams in bad form. It's possible. Here are my pre-Peterborough (Preterborough?) talking points. Could this be an easy win? The bookies aren't giving Peterborough much of a chance of winning this, with...

Should U21s play in the EFL trophy?, socks, haircuts and a mismatch – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 6-2 win over Newcastle U21s

Matches, Notes
Huddersfield Town beat Newcastle United’s Under 21 6-2 on Tuesday night and the scoreline, if anything, flatters Newcastle United’s youngsters as it was clear from the first 30 seconds of this game that Town would be comfortable winners.  Even though the opposition was modest, Town remained professional and put in a disciplined performance where they did enough to convincingly beat their opponent without having to push themselves too hard.  I said in the player ratings article that this is a match that it’s hard to draw too many conclusions from but I’m going to have a go anyway… Leo Castledine was Town's best player on the night` A clear mismatch Winning by a four-goal margin might seem like a flattering result for the winning team but I think it’s the other way a...

“He needs to stop moaning” – Player ratings for Huddersfield Town’s 6-2 win over Newcastle U21s

Huddersfield Town signalled their intent to go deep into the Vertu trophy last night when they beat Newcastle Under 21s 6-2. The game itself was a complete mismatch, with Newcastle’s youngsters looking like rabbits in the headlights at times. While there was a sprinkling of talent among Newcastle’s team, they had nothing like the same level of match sharpness or tactical understanding to be able to compete on an even footing in this game.  Despite making lots of changes from the weekend’s starting eleven, Lee Grant fielded a strong team, with Daniel Vost being the only player not a proper first team player. While a game with eight goals in it would usually be described as a thriller, this game was a bit more like an unevenly balanced training match, played in front of a handful of fans....

Winning the whole thing, unexpected player availability and Newcastle sell out of tickets – Talking points ahead of Huddersfield Town v Newcastle U21s

Huddersfield Town kick off their Vertu Trophy campaign tonight against Newcastle's Under 21 team. Probably the least exciting game of the season and, in some ways, almost insulting that we're being asked to play against another team’s youth team. Even more so when you consider we were promoted to the Premier League the same year as Newcastle not that long since.  While the reputation of this competition is about as bad as it can get, it's also an opportunity to win some silverware and to have a day out at Wembley. It's also another chance for our fringe players and promising youths to get a run out in a competitive game.  Here are my talking points ahead of this competition… Town want to win this competition  While Lee Grant talked before this game about how keen...

Huddersfield Town are starting their road to Wembley tonight, with their first group game of this year’s Vertu Trophy. It might be a bit premature to start booking hotels for the final, but the ambition from the club is to go all the way in this competition. We’ll get a sense of how serious the club are about pursuing this target when we see the lineup tonight. If Lee Grant picks mostly first-team members, then we’re going for it. If it’s mainly B Teamers with a few fringe first teamers getting a run out, then we’re not actually that serious about this competition.  Here’s how I think we’ll line up… Goalkeeper: Goodman With a stay on the sidelines coming up after his red card at the weekend, Goodman has a last chance to get some minutes in before stepping aside for Lee Nichol...
