Pressing, passing and aggression – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 1-1 draw with BSC Young Boys

Huddersfield Town put in their best performance of preseason on Tuesday with a 1-1 draw against the Young Boys of Berne, a Swiss team once managed by David Wagner and a regular competitor in European competition. Town were not intimidated by the step up in competition and dominated the early parts of the game thanks to an energetic press that stopped their opponent getting a foothold in the game. Young Boys finished the stronger of the two sides as Town's multiple changes meant we lost our rhythm and energy. The game had some interesting and encouraging moments as well as some causes for mild concern. Yep, “encouraging moments” and “mild concerns” are about as hyperbolic as you can get about a friendly. Ladapo scores! Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 1-0 win over Barrow

Huddersfield Town were 1-0 winners in their Canalside-based friendly against Barrow. While the scoreline was modest and the opponent hardly a footballing superpower, the game was a good run out for the squad. Football wasn’t the winner in this match, this was all about getting “minutes in the tank”. With all the first team and a few B Team players getting 45 minutes, this game served its purpose even if it was a bit of a non-event for a spectator. I often wonder how I'm going to find anything to write about these sorts of games. The one word review would be: meh. But regardless of the game being a pretty dull affair, there were little bits and pieces of intrigue that I’ll cover below. Injuries, Youth, Tactics, Streaming, Wingers – 5 things to watch for in Huddersfield Town v Barrow

Huddersfield Town take on Barrow in a behind closed doors game on Tuesday lunchtime. The one o'clock kick off is taking place at Canalside with fans only able to watch it via a £6 live stream through the club's website. You could quibble that it's not really “behind closed doors” when the game is being streamed around the world, as the title suggests a game that nobody can know about. Though the results of Town's recent behind closed doors games have not been kept secret anyway, so it's a good thing it's going to be available for anyone silly enough to spend money watching on a pointless friendly (I will be among those stupid people). A new hope and familiar problems – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 3-1 friendly defeat to Emley

It’s an established fact of preseason friendlies that results don’t matter if you lose but are a very good sign if you win. So, working off that system, Town’s 3-1 defeat to Emley is meaningless other than it providing a good workout for the many, many players involved. Also, the scoreline is genuinely a bit misleading if you didn’t catch the game, as the three Emley goals all came in the final half an hour, when the first team had finished and the academy lads were given a run out. The fact the first team could only put one goal past Emley in the first hour of the game isn’t great but it’s nothing to be too worried about at this stage. With the players only being back in training a week, it’s unlikely this style of play is anywhere close to where Lee Grant wants to get this team....

Huddersfield Town’s season ends with a whimper ahead of a summer of change

At least the weather was nice Huddersfield Town’s end-of-season collapse was brought to its conclusion on Saturday with a 4-1 defeat to Leyton Orient on Saturday. While Leyton Orient weren’t exactly world beaters, they were organised, fit and effective. They played like a team and actually cared about the outcome of the game. Town were the opposite. Despite having the better players on paper, there was only ever going to be one winner of this game. It’s a shame that Jonathan Hogg ended his Town career at this point, with this squad of players, after 12 years of loyal and dedicated service. Never tell me the odds! Huddersfield Town’s playoff hopes dwindle after 1-0 defeat to Wycombe Wanderers

Huddersfield Town lost by a single goal to Wycombe on Tuesdays night, as Udoh’s goal was enough to separate the two teams. While the result was terrible for Town's promotion prospects, there were signs of improvement. Too little, too late, but it was still pleasing to see the team looking more coherent even if some familiar problems prevented us from getting anything from the game. With Town now four points and two league positions away from sixth place, it looks very hard for us to close this gap on the two teams above us. An unconvincing win – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 2-1 victory over Mansfield Town

Huddersfield Town beat Mansfield on Saturday by two goals to one. After back-to-back away defeats against Charlton and Lincoln, it was good to get back to winning ways even if the performance was far from perfect. Mansfield could easily have taken something from this game if they had taken some fairly easy chances, but thankfully Town scored from their only two shots on goal all game and that was enough to get them over the line. The old adage goes that winning games where you’ve not played well is a hallmark of a successful team. It’s hard to see it that way for Town this season, as so many of our victories have come with disclaimers about some element of the performance. Toothless Huddersfield Town limp to 1-0 defeat against Lincoln

There were promising signs in the early stages of this game, Town seemed to have put right the glaring issues that led to a hammering at Charlton. Sadly, the improvement wasn’t much of an upgrade as Lincoln made the most of lax marking to score a well-taken set piece goal and Town were unable to break down Lincoln’s defence to get back into the game. As the game wore on, Town’s confidence shrank as Lincoln’s grew and there was nowhere near enough attacking impetus as we tapped the ball around too much and rarely opened up Lincoln. I worried that my article after the Charlton game had been too damning of Town but this mildly improved performance did nothing to dissuade me from the idea that promotion is not going to happen for Town this season. A grumpy look at Huddersfield Town’s 4-0 capitulation to Charlton

Town hit the self-destruct button on Saturday afternoon with an abject performance that effectively gifted the game to Charlton. While the hosts played well, Town showed a complete inability to cope with any pressure and good saves from Lee Nichols are the only reason the scoreline wasn't worse than 4-0. While the defeat dumped Town out of the playoff places, they're still only a point away from Reading in sixth. However, this game left me not caring too much about whether Town can finish in the top six as it showed Town are way off the pace when compared to another likely playoff contender. “Give me lucky generals” – Jon Worthington’s Huddersfield Town cruise to 5-1 victory over woeful Crawley Town

Huddersfield Town scored their first home goal of 2025 on Saturday, which was then followed by the second, third, fourth and fifth before the game was over. Though actually, the game was over after 28 minutes when Town scored their fourth goal and the rest of the match was more of an exhibition game. Town beat Crawley 5-1 to kickstart Jon Worthington's caretaker spell with a goal-difference boosting victory. While the visitors were rank in the opening spell of the game, it wasn’t just their capitulation that led to this victory. Huddersfield Town also looked refreshed and energised after months of leggy and uninspiring performances under Michael Duff. Here are my notes on this game… Wow, Crawley were bad!
