Town travelled to Bury for their opening preseason game last night. Here’s a breakdown of all the goals Town scored, with tweets from the club showing clips of each goal. For some reason the quality of the clips in the tweets isn’t great for me. If you’d like to see the highlights in better quality, I’d suggest checking out the Sky Sports highlights of Huddersfield Town’s 4-0 victory.
Alex Pritchard opens the scoring

Philip Billing makes a driving run through central midfield, lays the ball off to Pritchard in the left channel and he drills the ball in from an acute angle. Billing did well to get forward and find an attacking player in a dangerous position, but there wasn’t nearly enough pressure on the ball from Bury.
Pritchard’s finish was excellent and beat the keeper from a tight angle. OK, you could maybe say the keeper could have done better but I’d rather focus on the positives for Town. One of Pritchard’s strengths is his ability to operate in tight areas and make the most of small amounts of space, so it’s no fluke that he scored this type of goal.
Rajiv van La Parra arrives in the box just in time to double Town’s lead

I think this was my favourite goal of the evening. VLP fought free from a crowd of players and laid the ball off to Löwe, who was completely unmarked on the left-wing. He ran forward and crossed the ball in, and van La Parra arrived in the box at the right time to slot home.
I’m fond of this goal because Town used the flanks well to stretch the opposition and attacking players filled up the box for the delivery. Last season the striker was often the only player in the box when we crossed, but this goal shows the value of players pushing forward and trying to get on the end of crosses.
Sabiri nods in Town’s third

Löwe got another assist under his belt for this goal, putting in another quality cross, which Sabiri rose to and headed in from close range. It was pretty shabby defending from Bury, but good movement in the box from Sabiri to find the space.
I’m hoping that Sabiri will give Pritchard some genuine competition for the number ten slot this season. He’s surprisingly tall and strong, so offers a different way of playing to the diminutive Pritchard.
Collin Quaner sets up Matt Daly’s first senior goal for Town

I blogged last week about Matt Daly joining the first-team preseason training, and it was great to see him get some minutes on the pitch. He showed that he can mix it up with the big boys, by turning in Collin Quaner’s chipped cross.
Daly showed good composure as he took the ball first time and turned it into the net. This was another goal that was helped by Town flooding the box with players when the cross came in. Depoitre and VLP both nearly got their heads on the cross, but Daly followed them up and reaped the rewards. Could this be the first of many for the academy prospect?
Another well written, insightful post. Worth repeating this approach for all Town games I would suggest. The big bonus for me is that it means I can step up my boycott of the Examiner to include their Town coverage.
Thanks Gavin. Let’s hope there are enough Town goals to keep writing about them.
I wasn’t there, but it looked from the video like Billing sauntered forward rather than drove. But hey, it produced a goal so well done to PB and AP
