Predicted Huddersfield Town XI to take on Newcastle U21s

Huddersfield Town are starting their road to Wembley tonight, with their first group game of this year’s Vertu Trophy. It might be a bit premature to start booking hotels for the final, but the ambition from the club is to go all the way in this competition. We’ll get a sense of how serious the club are about pursuing this target when we see the lineup tonight. If Lee Grant picks mostly first-team members, then we’re going for it. If it’s mainly B Teamers with a few fringe first teamers getting a run out, then we’re not actually that serious about this competition.  Here’s how I think we’ll line up… Goalkeeper: Goodman With a stay on the sidelines coming up after his red card at the weekend, Goodman has a last chance to get some minutes in before stepping aside for Lee Nichol...

A sloppy start, ifs and buts, howlers and the managerial dress code – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 3-1 defeat at Barnsley

Town tasted defeat for the second time this season when they lost 3-1 to Barnsley on Saturday. There were a few reasons that this game went the wrong way for the Terriers but Owen Goodman’s error for the opener and the rash challenge that led to his red card were the principal reasons we lost.  Barnsley were surprisingly good and deserved the win. They played a similar system to Town's but did it better. Obviously this was made easier by playing ten men but they also dominated the game when Town had a full complement of players on the pitch.  Here are a few of my thoughts on the game.  A sloppy start  Before I get to the red card, I want to cover how badly Town started this game. We looked half asleep and Barnsley were completely outplaying us. Far too many ...

“His blunders cost us the game” – Player ratings for Huddersfield Town’s 3-1 defeat to Barnsley

Huddersfield Town lost 3-1 to Barnsley on Saturday thanks mostly to Owen Goodman conceding the first due to a handling howler and then being sent off for an ill-judged charge out of his box that looked more like it belonged in professional wrestling rather than football. Though it has to be conceded that Town started poorly regardless of Goodman's antics and Barnsley deserved their lead, which they extended with a deflected goal that wrong footed Nicholls. The third for Barnsley came later in the second half after a spirited response from Town, this time a saved shot fell kindly for Keillor-Dunn to convert from close range.  It was a poor day for the majority of Town's players, who were put in an awful position by Goodman and the game was effectively over before half time.  ...

Predicted Huddersfield Town XI to take on Barnsley

Huddersfield Town are in South Yorkshire today to take on Barnsley this afternoon, probably the local derby that I’ve seen Town compete in most during my time supporting the club. Leeds and Bradford are more fierce rivalries but Barnsley have been operating in the same league as Town more often than those two so are a more familiar foe.  The timing of this fixture catches both teams in a good moment, with Town winning four of their first five games and Barnsley only two points worse off, with three wins, a draw and a defeat from their opening five league outings. Both have navigated two rounds of the League Cup too. So hopefully we’ll see two teams in good form, having a real go at it.  Lee Grant has a few welcome selection headaches, after making ten changes for the cup in...
Barnsley’s false position, a huge away following, getting over Herbie & a friendly rivalry? Talking points ahead of Huddersfield Town’s game against Barnsley

Barnsley’s false position, a huge away following, getting over Herbie & a friendly rivalry? Talking points ahead of Huddersfield Town’s game against Barnsley

Huddersfield Town take on Barnsley on Saturday afternoon, in another Yorkshire derby for the Terriers. More interestingly, it’s a contest between two teams that have had good starts to the season and are currently at the top end of the table. Barnsley lost at Wimbledon last weekend but were undefeated until that point and are only two points behind Huddersfield Town.  Both teams have managers that are new to the job, want to play an attacking type of football, want their team to press the opposition, and from what I can see, Barnsley’s appointment of Conor Hourihane has helped to repair the relationship between club and fans, which had become strained in recent disappointing seasons, just like we’ve experienced at Town. So it should be an interesting encounter between two teams tha...

Castledine or Carss?, a textbook performance, penalty heroics and cup benefits – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s cup win over Sunderland

Matches, Notes
After beating a top-end Championship opposition in the first round, Huddersfield Town knocked out Premier League Sunderland in their second round game of the league cup. And while some may quibble that Town needed penalties in both games, the fact they have won two penalty shootouts can only be good experience. While we don't want to rely on the lottery of the playoffs to go up this season, if we end up in that situation we will benefit from recent penalty experience. As much as you can practise the technical skill of taking a penalty, nothing compares to doing in a stadium with real pressure (even if the League Cup is a good bit lower stakes than a playoff shootout). There was an awful lot to like about this Town performance and very little to grumble about. There’s a risk that some fa...

“A goal of the season contender” – Player ratings for Huddersfield Town’s penalty win over Sunderland

Huddersfield Town made it through to the third round of the League Cup after knocking out Premier League new boys Sunderland on penalties. Town put in an almost flawless first half performance for a team playing against an opponent from a higher league, with Leo Castledine’s sublime strike the icing on the cake of an already great team performance. The second half involved a lot more hanging on and Sunderland had more chances than the one they scored. But Town held their shape well and eventually clawed their way back into the game enough to have chances to win it themselves in the dying stages.  The scores might not reflect a brilliant win against Premier League opposition but the real star of this performance (apart from Leo Castledine) was the collective effort of the team to work ha...

Predicted Huddersfield Town XI to take on Sunderland

Town are in Sunderland tonight for the second round of the league cup. With wholesale changes likely to the starting lineup, it's an impossible task to know what sort of team we will be fielding. There's not much point debating whether Town should or shouldn't field a strong team, as this competition is universally used by teams to give their fringe players a run out.  Luckily, Town have a good amount of depth and few injuries compared to last season, so we can rest players and not lose too much. In fact, this game is a good opportunity to get minutes into a few players that will be miffed to be outside of the starting eleven for league games.  Goalkeeper: Nicholls  Lee Nicholls was the hero of the penalty shootout in the first round and could be again if we can kee...

Why Town might win, Lee Grant’s principles, Gooch’s welcome & fringe players to watch – Talking points ahead of Huddersfield Town’s trip to Sunderland

Huddersfield Town head to The Stadium of Light on Tuesday night for a League Cup game with Premier League new boys, Sunderland. Many fans will find it impossible to get excited about this game or any cup game, but I really enjoyed our game in the first round against Leicester so I’m optimistic this game will be an entertaining watch too.  While the league is obviously Town’s priority this season, these games in the cup give an opportunity to players that have had limited minutes on the pitch so far and knockout football is good fun to watch. This game also has the added incentive of testing ourselves against a Premier League team, even if it is mostly the fringe players they field.  Here are a few of my thoughts before this game… Will Lee Grant stick to his principles?&n...

One for the purists, Lee Grant’s outbursts, promotion possibilities, an odd news story & keeping control – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s win over Stevenage

Huddersfield Town beat Stevenage 1-0 on Saturday afternoon, which most people who click on this article will already be fully aware of. However, it feels a bit weird just jumping straight into the article without a bit of preamble at the top, so that's why I like to start these posts by stating the bleedin’ obvious.  Stevenage didn’t live up to the billing of being the league’s best team, and the suspicion that their four wins were more to do with a kind run of fixtures rather than them being anything special. In fact, I’d say Stevenage were the most average, most League-One-est opponent we’ve faced yet this season. They worked hard, were organised but lacked flair or attacking intent, possibly because Town worked equally hard as a unit to deny them openings. The fact that Town man...
