Predicted Huddersfield Town XI to take on Leyton Orient

Predicted Huddersfield Town XI to take on Leyton Orient

Matches, Previews
Huddersfield Town take on Leyton Orient later today at the newly named, Accu stadium. Newness is a theme, we have a new manager, new players, a new system and a new sense of hope. While the raft of changes since last season ended all seem positive, today's game is the first chance to see what this new version of Huddersfield Town are really about.  Predicting Lee Grant's starting eleven is tricky today as Grant was cagey about the availability of his players, apart from confirming Anthony Evans will be out for up to ten weeks with a gammy knee. It's also Town's first competitive outing under Grant, so he may pick a different team to the one we saw against Burnley last weekend, as some players were apparently rested as a precaution rather than genuinely injured.  Here's how ...

New rules, 2 strikers 1 slot, Koroma’s return & Northern Football – 4 talking points ahead of Huddersfield Town v Leyton Orient

After a long wait over the summer, football is finally back when Huddersfield Town open their League One campaign against Leyton Orient at the Accu Stadium tomorrow (Saturday). The summer break has felt longer than usual this year because Town’s season effectively ended in March when Michael Duff was sacked. While Jonathan Worthington took charge for the final ten games, we tailed off so badly it was clear our season was over long before the games actually stopped.  Our opening day fixture is the same as last season’s final fixture, which feels appropriate, as that 4-1 defeat was as bad as any of the other humbling defeats Town suffered last season and repeating it gives us a chance to signal a fresh start. Town’s players were so mentally checked out of that game that it wouldn’t h...
We’re doomed! A pessimistic preview for Huddersfield Town’s 2025/26 season

We’re doomed! A pessimistic preview for Huddersfield Town’s 2025/26 season

Opinion, Tactics
I’ve already published my optimistic preview of the upcoming season, so what follows are all my negative and unpleasant thoughts. Given the current mood around the club, it feels a bit wrong to be applying a cynical perspective to a summer that has been overwhelmingly positive from a Town perspective.  Having said that, the spring was diabolical for Town. We finished the season in relegation form and the team had completely imploded. Plenty has changed at Town since the final game of last season, a new manager, 12 players left, 11 players have arrived, a new coaching team has come in and a new philosophy is developing on the field. But it’s hard not to worry that all this might be yet another case of raised expectations that are ultimately dashed when cold, hard reality bites.  ...

Sunshine and kittens! A positive preview for Huddersfield Town’s 2025/26 season

Opinion, Tactics
It’s been a long running tradition on this blog to split my season preview articles into two sections, with all the positivity poured into one and the dark, negative feelings contained in the other. To quote John Cooper Clarke, it makes me feel like I’ve got “a dual personality, I hate both of them” (swear filters stop me from sharing the name of the poem this line comes from).  This is the happy look ahead to the 2025/26 season, which you may think Town fans will flock towards compared to the miserable version. Sadly, year after year, the stats show that Town fans are drawn to negativity far more than positivity. So if you chose to click on this article then you have my permission to get your felt tips and sticky back plastic out to make yourself a “happy clapper” badge that you c...
Predicted Huddersfield Town XI to take on Burnley

Predicted Huddersfield Town XI to take on Burnley

Matches
The team selections in preseason have been hard to predict because the main priority has been to get minutes into the legs of as many players as possible. Now we're facing the final game before the League One opener against Leyton Orient next weekend, I expect something closer to our best eleven against Burnley.  With eleven signings so far this summer and more expected before the transfer deadline, it's going to feel like a brand new version of Huddersfield Town, which is much needed after previous failures. All this change will hopefully mean a new positive approach and a fresh sense of optimism around the club.  After winning promotion to the Premier League last season, Burnley are likely to present us with a tough challenge, even accounting for their squad being split b...
Nastiness, The Radulovic Redemption, an injury crisis & transfer news – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 1-0 win over Greuther Furth

Nastiness, The Radulovic Redemption, an injury crisis & transfer news – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 1-0 win over Greuther Furth

Matches
Huddersfield Town were 1-0 winners against Greurther Furth on Saturday, in their final friendly of their Austrian tour. It was a scrappy, bad-tempered and low quality game of football but Town just about deserved the win against a team that is technically playing at a level above them (the German second tier).  Here are some of my thoughts about the game… Another rough and tumble encounter  The most memorable thing about this friendly game was how unfriendly it was. Just like against Young Boys of Berne, Town got right up in the faces of their opposition and made life difficult for them. The physical treatment we handed out was perhaps a bit over the top at times and Kasumu could have seen red for some of his challenges he put in while on a booking.  After seeing...
Pressing, passing and aggression – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 1-1 draw with BSC Young Boys

Pressing, passing and aggression – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 1-1 draw with BSC Young Boys

Matches
Huddersfield Town put in their best performance of preseason on Tuesday with a 1-1 draw against the Young Boys of Berne, a Swiss team once managed by David Wagner and a regular competitor in European competition. Town were not intimidated by the step up in competition and dominated the early parts of the game thanks to an energetic press that stopped their opponent getting a foothold in the game. Young Boys finished the stronger of the two sides as Town's multiple changes meant we lost our rhythm and energy.  The game had some interesting and encouraging moments as well as some causes for mild concern. Yep, “encouraging moments” and “mild concerns” are about as hyperbolic as you can get about a friendly. Here are my thoughts in a bit more detail. A pressing matter This was the fir...
Ladapo scores! Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 1-0 win over Barrow

Ladapo scores! Notes on Huddersfield Town’s 1-0 win over Barrow

Matches
Huddersfield Town were 1-0 winners in their Canalside-based friendly against Barrow. While the scoreline was modest and the opponent hardly a footballing superpower, the game was a good run out for the squad. Football wasn’t the winner in this match, this was all about getting “minutes in the tank”. With all the first team and a few B Team players getting 45 minutes, this game served its purpose even if it was a bit of a non-event for a spectator. I often wonder how I'm going to find anything to write about these sorts of games. The one word review would be: meh. But regardless of the game being a pretty dull affair, there were little bits and pieces of intrigue that I’ll cover below.  The first half - Good in the first two thirds Lineup: Chapman, Eccleston, Feeney, Roughan, ...

Injuries, Youth, Tactics, Streaming, Wingers – 5 things to watch for in Huddersfield Town v Barrow

Matches
Huddersfield Town take on Barrow in a behind closed doors game on Tuesday lunchtime. The one o'clock kick off is taking place at Canalside with fans only able to watch it via a £6 live stream through the club's website.  You could quibble that it's not really “behind closed doors” when the game is being streamed around the world, as the title suggests a game that nobody can know about. Though the results of Town's recent behind closed doors games have not been kept secret anyway, so it's a good thing it's going to be available for anyone silly enough to spend money watching on a pointless friendly (I will be among those stupid people). Is there an injury crisis? I wrote on Saturday about the players that were absent from the club's behind the scenes training video last week. ...
Who was missing from the Huddersfield Town training video?

Who was missing from the Huddersfield Town training video?

Opinion
There isn't a friendly for a few days and the transfer rumour mill isn't churning out much about Huddersfield Town. So with nothing better to do with my time, I've gone through Huddersfield Town’s latest training video and noted down who was there and who wasn't.  You may ask why on Earth I would do this. But if you're reading this then it means you've clicked this article and must be vaguely curious. Though, in reality, I think almost nobody reads these intro paragraphs and most skip to the main content. However, articles look weird without this intro section so I'll keep adding a paragraph or two at the start for those that like to be eased in gently.  Some unexpected faces were training in the video  Before I get to the people that didn't feature in the video, it...
