4 reasons to be positive after Huddersfield Town’s defeat to Newcastle

Huddersfield Town turned in another poor performance against Newcastle, beaten 1-0 in a game where they showed little attacking intent. It leaves Town hovering perilously above the relegation zone and leaves many fans feeling nervous.

It’s not all doom and gloom. Here are some reasons for Huddersfield Town fans to feel positive right now.

West Brom, Swansea, Crystal Palace and Southampton all lost too

It seems that the bottom third of the table have all hit bad form at the same time and nobody around us is picking up points. Town can’t rely on relegation rivals losing every week, but the total points needed to be safe might be lower than we previously thought given the way Southampton, West Brom and Stoke (who play Arsenal this weekend) are all struggling.

While the defeat to Newcastle stings and pushes Newcastle up the table, there are still plenty of teams that look like they’re going to struggle to get to 40 points.

Town under David Wagner have consistently bounced back from disappointment

Last season’s promotion wasn’t a steady rise to the Premier League, it was a rollercoaster of amazing moments that were punctuated with disastrous defeats. Just when it seemed like we’d been found out and were returning to our expected place in the pecking order, we’d put together a run of results.

There’s no escaping the fact that this last few games have been very disappointing, but I believe this team can turn things around. David Wagner has talked about reacting the right way to defeats, and that’s what his team will show in the next few weeks. We’re not going to win every game remaining, but we’ll keep picking ourselves up and going into the next game full of belief. I’m not sure the same could be said for Southampton, Stoke, and West Brom’s players.

Our fans are better than other teams in the relegation struggle

The importance of fans is often exaggerated by players and managers trying to win the favour of their home support. However, the noise and enthusiasm Huddersfield Town fans have made over the last couple of seasons have clearly pushed the team on to achieve more than they would with a lukewarm atmosphere.

Town have played in some of the world’s most famous theatres of football this season, yet the atmosphere inside places such as Old Trafford and Anfield has been tepid at best. The atmosphere fans create inside the John Smith’s Stadium can genuinely make a difference to the outcome of a game, pushing our players on to greater things and making opposition players freeze (Lindelof for Manchester United being an example of this).

While there are plenty of Town fans happy to go on social media and moan about the team after a poor result, I’m confident that our support will be loud and unequivocal in every one of the remaining games. This passionate support could be the difference in Town staying up or going down.

We could be safe in two games time

Brighton away and Watford at home are our next two games, and Town should have a chance of winning in both of them. Obviously, it won’t be easy, but we’ve already beaten both of these teams before this season. If we pick up six points from these two games then it could be enough to put Town safe.

Brighton are a decent team, but they’re not world beaters and I’d say that we’re evenly matched and have nothing to fear. Watford’s season is more or less over now too, as they’re not likely to go down and aren’t all that close to a European spot. If Town play their best, then it’s not ridiculous to think we could be sat on 37 points in two games time.

Excellent. Makes such a change from the moaners, jeremiahs and whingers queueing up to have their say. Hope you are right about the crowd. We didn’t cover ourselves in glory against Palace. Too easily dispirited. This season is going all the way to the Arsenal game. There’s a danger some fans succeed in writing us off before then.

Although I wonder where the next goal is coming from, let alone the next win, I still have every faith in David Wagner.who has done a terrific job. Trying to be reallistic, rather than negative, he has worked a miracle with the players he has. I think we are all aware that our main problem is creating, and scoring goals. Our wide, attacking players are not good enough at this level. Has the time arrived to change the system to 3-5-1-1 or 3-5-2 with the following team: Lossle, Hadergjonaj, Zanka, Schindler, Kongolo, Lowe: Billin, Hogg, Mooy: Pritchard, Mounie/Depoitre ?

I love this team but I fear they are good enough. If we stay up then we need to strengthen all over the pitch
