Huddersfield Town 1-3 Southampton – 7 thoughts on Town’s dismal defeat

Huddersfield Town 1-3 Southampton – 7 thoughts on Town’s dismal defeat

Matches, Opinion
Watching Town lose isn’t a new experience this season but our 3-1 defeat to Southampton was hard to take. It was arguably Town’s worst performance of the season and we allowed a relegation rival to put breathing space between us and them. Here are a few of my thoughts following a bad day at the office for Town. Playing two strikers showed signs of promise but didn’t quite come off Town started the game in a slightly altered formation. We still had three central defenders, with wingbacks providing some width. Billing and Bacuna were paired in defensive midfield, with Pritchard slightly further forward behind a front line of Mounié and Mbenza. The combination of Mbenza’s pace and Mounié’s ability in the air has potential to be a successful partnership, but it didn’t quite work on Sat...

Town came from behind to snatch a point against Southampton. It wasn't Town's best performance but there were some excellent moments too. Here are my player ratings from a performance that had a few highs and lows. Lössl - 6/10 Was brave to keep going after the kick in the face and made a few good saves. However, he ballsed up with his kicking twice and could easily have gifted Southampton at a goal or two. Malone - 6/10 He’s a welcome attacking threat but he gets so far forward that we’re exposed at the back. I feel like we’re less solid when he’s on the pitch instead of Löwe. His positional sense isn’t great and he’s not as good a tackler as Löwe. Schindler - 7/10 Stepped out of defence to try to break play up in midfield and got it wrong a couple of times. Otherwise solid and unlu...
Talking points from the draw at Southampton – A point is better than a kick in the face

Talking points from the draw at Southampton – A point is better than a kick in the face

Matches
Town fought hard and came back from behind to take a point from their game at Southampton. It wasn’t our best performance so far in the top flight but a mixture of grit, luck, and Southampton’s profligacy in front of goal meant Town avoided defeat. It wasn't as good a performance as Watford last week but it was a good point to take on away from home. The game’s biggest talking point Charlie Austin deliberately kicking Jonas Lössl in the face. The Southampton striker plead his innocence but the slow-motion replay was damning. Somewhat surprisingly, the FA have acted on this injustice and have retrospectively charged Austin with violent conduct. Town’s first undeserved point in the Premier League So far this season Town have had to fight very hard for every single point they’ve earned, ...

Southampton away preview – tactics, lineups, last meeting & score prediction

Matches
Huddersfield Town head to the south coast for their last away game of the year, taking on Southampton at the Saint Mary’s stadium. Town are currently one place and three points above Southampton in the Premier League table, which few would have bet on at the start of the season. This is the first return fixture in the Premier League for Town, following the 0-0 draw at home with Southampton last August. Newly promoted sides often find it harder in the second half of the season because teams know what to expect when they play again. It’ll be interesting to see if Southampton differ their approach against Town. Who will David Wagner pick to play against Southampton? After such a fine performance against Watford and a full week to rest between games it’s hard to imagine wholesale changes ...
The 5 most interesting stats from the Southampton home game

The 5 most interesting stats from the Southampton home game

Matches, Tactics
Huddersfield Town drew with Southampton in their third Premier League game. It was one of the best 0-0 games I've ever seen, with plenty of chances and action. I've gone through the statistics websites and pulled out the five most interesting stats from the game and looked at what they mean. We put a lot of crosses into the box Squawka shows we played 32 crosses during the Southampton home game. Southampton managed just eight. It's been noticeable that we've changed our attacking style this season and often look to get the ball into the air and try to get Mounié on the end of it. Looking at the position the crosses came in from and where they ended up shows that we're now playing to Mounié's strength in the air. While we didn't get the goal we wanted against Southampton, if we can k...

Huddersfield Town drew 0-0 with Southampton in their third Premier League game, giving them seven points from the first three games and sending them (briefly) back to the top of the table. It was a stunning exhibition of counter-pressing football from Wagner's men. Southampton looked visibly shocked by the intensity Town brought to the pitch and will consider themselves lucky to be taking a point back to the south coast. This was another great team performance from Town, so it should be no surprise to see another set of high ratings. Jonas Lössl - 8 out of 10 Once again his distribution was superb. OK, he played a few loose balls out from the back in the second half but he played some great balls too. He also made another incredible save late in the game. He's stopped what looked li...

It's been a busy week for Town since beating Newcastle United last Sunday. We signed Sabiri, beat Rotherham in the league cup, and signed Hadergjonaj on loan. Now attention turns back to the Premier League, as Town host Southampton in their biggest challenge of the season so far. Huddersfield Town v Southampton – Match details Kickoff: 3 pm, Saturday 25 August 2017 - That's right, another 3 o'clock kickoff in the Premier League. Being unglamorous has its advantages. Ticket availability: Southampton requested a smaller allocation, so Town have more tickets than usual for the south stand. At the time of writing, it's still possible to buy tickets but it may sell out before kickoff. Likely lineup Wednesday's 2-1 league cup win against Rotherham didn't see any of Town's second string ma...
