Huddersfield Town beat Manchester United's Under 21 team 4-1 on Tuesday night in the final group game of the Bristol Street Motors Cup. The victory meant that Town leapfrogged the youth team into second place and secured a place in the knockout stages of the cup that will progress from waste of time to incredibly important if we can win a few more games and secure a day out to Wembley. It's hard to work out how good this result and performance were really. Manchester United's youngsters are a very different team to the ones we're typically playing every week, so giving them a convincing beating with a near-full-strength Town team isn't easy to judge. Trying to predict the Huddersfield Town lineup up for a Bristol Street Motors game is a fool’s errand, as it's likely that a good number of players will be rested for a competition that is broadly viewed as a waste of time until you get to the final stages. Having said that, I think Michael Duff may be a bit more conservative with his rotation for this game, after losing to Doncaster in this competition in early September and Tamworth in the FA Cup the other week I doubt he wants another cup defeat. The performance was good, but Town didn’t have the bit of luck or quality that they needed to capitalise on dominating the game. The scoreline makes it look like a comfortable win, but we made life uncomfortable for the opposition for long periods. This might not be a popular opinion but I genuinely believe that Huddersfield Town are a better club to support than Manchester United. It’s not because I’m a masochist who delights in pain, I think there’s a lot more to enjoy about supporting a small team. Town suffered their fifth consecutive defeat against Manchester United last Saturday, stretching the winless run to eight games. While most fans expected we’d experience tough spells like this, it’s still hard to watch us getting beaten every week. There are some positives to take from our recent games though. Liverpool and Manchester United were always strong favourites to beat us, but there are some things to draw from these matches which show signs of recovery. Huddersfield Town fell to a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford. It started out as a solid defensive display but Town struggled to find a response after they went behind. It was always going to be hard to get anything from this game, but I think there were signs of improvement in Town’s performance. Here are my player ratings from the match. Jonas Lössl - 8 out of 10 Made some good saves, including the penalty from Sanchez. It was unfortunate that the ball ricocheted off his body and straight out to the penalty taker. He played safe with his kicking, which was the right choice under the circumstances. Despite the doom and gloom, I think we've got a better chance against Manchester United than the bookies predict. Don't forget they wrote us off in the home game, where Town beat Man United 2-1.
