Toothless – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s defeat to Blackpool

Toothless – Notes on Huddersfield Town’s defeat to Blackpool

Matches, Notes
Huddersfield Town lost their first game of the season against Blackpool on Saturday afternoon. It was a game of three distinct parts, with Town dominating the opening stages, then losing their heads for a spell where they conceded three goals, and after pulling a goal back and a Blackpool red card, the game settled into a dismal attack and defence training exercise where Town repeatedly failed to find a way through Blackpool's defence.  While Town's toothless attacking play was a concern, the three quick goals they conceded is just as worrying. After talking so much about how things feel different at Town, this game was eerily similar to the type of football we saw last season. A blistering opening  The first few minutes of this game were brilliant to watch from a Town p...

“Got a lot wrong” – Player ratings for Huddersfield Town’s 3-2 defeat to Blackpool

Matches, Player ratings
Huddersfield Town tasted defeat for the first time this season after losing 3-2 to Blackpool despite playing against ten men for the best part of an hour. A calamitous period in the middle of the first half saw Town go from 1-0 up to 3-1 down and the red card that ended Blackpool's period of dominance led to an unpleasant finish for Town as they huffed and puffed but couldn't break down Blackpool's impressive defence. This defeat may be useful to bring down the skyrocketing expectations that our first three wins brought (including my own) but will hopefully only be a blip rather than anything more concerning.  Here's what I made of each performance… Owen Goodman - 5 out of 10 Looked like he should have done better with the first goal, even accounting for the deflection. Th...

Predicted Huddersfield Town XI to take on Blackpool

Matches, Predicted lineups
Huddersfield Town take on Blackpool later today in a game that sees Town, with a record so far this season of three wins in three, take on Blackpool with the opposite form to Town, having lost all three of their games.  It's possibly a good time to take on Steve Bruce's team before they've properly hit their stride but Lee Grant warned in his pre-match press conference that they could be more dangerous because of their bad start.  Here's how I think Town will line up… Goalkeeper: Owen Goodman Lee Nicholls was the penalty shootout hero on Wednesday night but his kicking was noticeably more reserved than Goodman's has been, which often put Town on the back foot when building up from the back. Goodman has looked like an accident waiting to happen so far but has yet to co...
Wounded animals, winning runs, stinky fans, and extra rest – 6 talking points ahead of Huddersfield Town’s trip to Blackpool

Wounded animals, winning runs, stinky fans, and extra rest – 6 talking points ahead of Huddersfield Town’s trip to Blackpool

Matches, Talking points
The games are coming thick and fast now the new season is properly underway and Town have a trip to the seaside to take on Blackpool on Saturday afternoon. The game follows quickly in the wake of Town’s impressive penalties victory over Leicester in the League Cup on Wednesday night but Lee Grant will want to make sure there’s no hangover for this game.  Huddersfield Town fans are less likely to be avoiding hangovers, as a boozy do on the coast is almost certain for many in the sold out away end. With Town winning their opening three games of the season and Blackpool losing all three of theirs, the omens look good on paper but the reality is likely to be different.  Here are a few of the main talking points ahead of this fixture… Can Town keep their winning start going? ...

Taylor Opens His Account as Town Fight Back for Draw – Notes on the draw with Blackpool

Blackpool have been a bogey team for Huddersfield Town this season. Despite them being 14th in the table, they've done a number on us twice. Both the home and away games against Blackpool have been tough for Town and Blackpool deserve the 4 points they've taken off us in those games. Based on how they've played against us, Blackpool should be playoff contenders but clearly, they just raise their game for us.  Having said that, Town repeated some mistakes they've been guilty of all season and made a few new ones too. But on the positive side, they found a way back into the game and continued the unbeaten run despite putting in a shoddy first 45 minutes in this game. A first half riddled with old problems and a few new ones The home game against Blackpool was one of the worst e...

A limp response – Notes on Town’s defeat to Blackpool

Huddersfield Town lost to Blackpool on Tuesday night in a defeat that saw them continue their poor form from Saturday's terrible performance against Northampton. While it wasn't quite as bad a showing as the 3-1 drubbing, the lows weren't quite so low, the fact we came into the game hoping to see a positive reaction after a defeat and were served up another plate of hot rubbish from Town made this defeat feel worse.  I asked in the title of my post-Northampton article if that game was just a blip. Losing the next game with a lifeless effort from the Terriers suggests there are bigger problems than just a one-off bad day. This article will rake over the goals of another disappointing home display for the Terriers and speculate about what might happen next for Town. More bad goals...
Predicted Huddersfield Town XI to take on Blackpool tonight

Predicted Huddersfield Town XI to take on Blackpool tonight

Matches
Last Saturday was a red letter day for the blog, as I successfully predicted the entire starting XI for Huddersfield Town. Much like a stopped clock is right twice a day, it does occasionally happen that I get the team prediction right but the task was made easier by the fact Town had won the previous game against Bolton by a large margin and the only likely change was forced by injury, with Headely coming in to replace Miller. Today's Town lineup against Blackpool is a much trickier beast to predict though, after near-universal underperformances against Northampton, every position could be up for grabs. But then again, Michael Duff has been fairly faithful to his regular starters so far in his tenure so may stick with his favourites despite the need for change.  So here's my predi...

It’s not time to sack Schofield…yet, Huddersfield Town are not too good to go down, empty seats, some positives – Notes on defeat to Blackpool

Huddersfield Town were once more the victims of refereeing technology failing spectacularly. While the failure of VAR to pick up two blatant penalties in the playoff final may have cost us hundreds of millions of pounds and a place in the Premier League (yes, I'm still not over it), yesterday's goal line technology malfunction merely cost us a goal which could have earned us a Championship point. The stakes were lower but the error was far more blatant and ultimately it could end up being a factor in how long Danny Schofield stays in his job. The goal that wasn't allowed has to be the first thing that is discussed but in fairness, Huddersfield Town were once again poor and struggled with all the same issues that have led to them having such a poor start to the season. So while we can cu...

Thoughts on Huddersfield Town’s transfer ins and outs, defeat to Bristol City and their crucial game against Blackpool

Matches, Opinion, Transfers
I’ve always thought that if you’re scrambling around on transfer deadline day to get your business done then you’ve done something wrong. So maybe we shouldn’t be quite so delighted with the flurry of activity that Town saw at Canalside on Thursday as the deadline approached. Three new players came through the door as even more were ushered out on loan.  In this article I’ll work my through the various deals that took place and then summarise a few of my thoughts on the defeat to Bristol City. I think the transfer news is probably more important than the defeat now, as the game has passed now and is probably not one Town fans want to spend a lot of time thinking about and at least the signings offer a little bit of hope! Michal Helik on a permanent deal from Barnsley I think this ...

Do Huddersfield Town really always lose midweek away games? – Blackpool preview

On the latest episode of the And He Takes That Chance podcast one of the hosts mentioned that Town never seem to win midweek away games, so I thought I’d look up the details and see if this was true.  I’m not one of those fans that can immediately recall every Town result from years past but a quick Google search reveals that Town do indeed have a horrendous recent record when they play away from home on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  Here's a look into this unusual stat and a bit of a preview of tonight's game too.  How long is it since Town won a midweek away fixture? Last season saw far more midweek fixtures than typical because the pandemic caused the season to start late and therefore have less time to complete the same number of fixtures. So there were far more ...
