Huddersfield Town fans asked to give their opinions on John Smiths’ Stadium reopening

Huddersfield Town will start the next season playing matches behind closed doors. At some point, with a bit of luck, they will gradually begin to let fans reenter the stadium to watch matches but there are still a lot of uncertainties around what might happen next.

Yesterday I wrote a bit more about what kind of decisions the club face before deciding on how they will reopen to fans. It’s likely to be a reduced capacity to begin with and social distancing will be in place. Little else is known.

The Huddersfield Town Supporters Association are now looking for input from Town fans about how the club should manage the gradual reopening. It’s a quick online survey that asks a few simple questions and has a box at the end to let you voice your opinions.

I would encourage Town fans to take the survey and let their views be known. The supporters association will then take the results and present them to the management of the club through the “At The Town” group that discusses issues that affect fans.

What does the questionnaire ask about?

You can click the link and just take the survey to find out but if you really want to know, here is what they are asking:

  • How old are you?
  • Which stand do you usually sit/stand in
  • If fans return to stadia but with limited capacities (15-50% of seats), how do you think the club should deal with the issue of who to admit to each game?
  • Would you be happy to sit in a different seat to usual, potentially even in a different stand?
  • Would you still attend games if there is a system of staggered arrival and departure times?
  • Would you still attend games if there are limited catering options available?
  • Would you still attend games if chanting/singing/shouting were actively discouraged to limit the spread of Covid-19?
  • Would you still attend games if you are required to sign a Code of Conduct prior to attending a match confirming your adherence to social distancing, remaining in your social bubbles, following directional signage, etc?
  • Would you still attend games if you are required to disclose your health status and confirm your nonattendance should you develop any symptoms of Covid-19?
  • If you can’t attend a game or only qualify for a percentage of games, what type of compensation would you expect?

Why are these particular questions being asked?

I don’t know whether these questions have been specifically given to the group by Huddersfield Town or if the supporters group have made them up themselves but I suspect these questions cover some of the tricky decisions the club is going to make.

I found it quite interesting that many of the questions are trying to gauge what inconveniences fans are willing to bear and still come to games. I can’t see many people minding having to sign some sort of document to say they’ll behave themselves (I can’t imagine a less effective way to get people to behave, but that’s beside the point) but some may not fancy the idea of arriving hours early in a stadium that may not even let you buy a cup of bovril.

Should I answer the survey?

Yes! I’ve written a couple of times this week about the issue of fans returning to the stadium and it’s obvious to me that’s it’s a highly controversial and difficult problem for the club to solve. This survey is a small way for fans to make their voices heard and will allow the club to hear what real fans are thinking.

What will happen at the ATT panel meeting when the survey is discussed?

I would hope that the club will take on board the feedback from fans and use it to help them make some of the decisions. Obviously they can’t just do whatever fans tell them to do and it’s worth bearing in mind that there are a huge spectrum of opinions on these issues.

I think it’s a positive that the club are using the supporters’ group to canvas opinion and are showing signs of listening to fans. Obviously, it’s easy to be cynical about these things and call it a PR stunt but I think the people at the club will genuinely want to keep fans happy. After the bad feeling created from Danny Cowley’s sacking I would think they are looking to avoid annoying fans and will want to get people feeling good about supporting Town again.
